both of my jobs involve me having a lot of interaction with new people but is that really the time to try and score numbers?

Maybe not score numbers per se, but keep in mind that when you're socializing, you're still exercising that socializing "muscle". So even if you're not doing cold approaches, you're still getting some practice in.

I generally try to talk to as many people as I can whenever there's some downtime. It's usually when I'm waiting for a train, waiting for a bus, when I'm on public transportation, when I'm walking somewhere, when I'm at a store, when I'm in line, when I'm in an elevator.

It's fun just to get into state as you do something random just by chatting it up with everybody around you. At least as a beginner, this has been an interesting experience, where even boring situations can suddenly become occasion for practicing.
