If you were really more concerned about your own like, personal growth and situation you wouldn't put so much investment in her. The fact that you are so upset she is with this other guy means you're just faking it and still heavily invested in her opinion. If this girl showed interest in you, i'm sure there's many others at your college who could do the same if you find ways to pursue them.

I thought girls preferred guys who have their own life?
That is one thing that most people do not understand. Women, and also men, are not a hive mind, acting and feeling all the same way. Sure, having your own life is attractive to a big portion of women, but just not all. The main point is that this way, you will attract those women who are attracted to this, and those who look for a guy that's giving himself up for her, won't.
Think about what you want, if it's a girl that wants to control you and your life, act that way, give yourself up, and see what you attract, but if you want a girl that most people would consider "valuable", and of course if you want to be happy just from what you do in life, then you should keep on having your own life.
