Topher, Nicholas, Jack: “What’s up?” This is a very popular ice breaker among the men. It’s a sink or swim. Luckily for Topher, he rose above expectations and started talking about David Sedaris right away. Smart move, buddy. We’re getting coffee soon to discuss. As for Nicholas, who happens to work in my office complex, we’re supposed to meet for lunch and chat about working in the same office complex. Sounds like a blast, right? Jack…wait, who’s Jack again?

Some embellish the question. Dodge: “Hey, what’s up? How do you start a conversation?” I didn’t know stream of thought was a pick-up line but here we are. Besides having a cool name, he turned out to be an ex-Griffith Park hiking tour guide that doesn’t continue conversations after a day (which seems to be a motif of Tinder).

More embellishment. Daniel: “Hey Nathalie, I like your style! What’s up?” Now here’s a man who knows how to compliment a lady! It only kind of worries me that every one of his photos is of him drinking some sort of alcoholic beverage. Does he think my style is borderline alcoholic? And he’s into that? In response to my tagline “Please don’t play the guitar for me,” Darren asked, “Have you had some kind of problem with people serenading you with the guitar?” Good question, Darren. I do have some kind of a problem. They’re the worst! Danny also went the same route, “since you’re so anti-guitar, happy to do a sax or bongo solo for you lol.” Man after my own heart.

Christopher: “Morning.” I mean, buy me breakfast first.

Mikey: “Hi :)” Emoticon in the first message made me a little uncertain. But then he told me he got catfished and I knew he was putting down his walls. It was only fair that I do the same. I think we’re supposed to get dinner sometime.

Aaron: “Hello” I think he was talking to his six pack prominently exposed in his profile.

Prince: “Tinder just told me we’d make beautiful kids. Presumptuous?” First, my friend Mallory accidentally swiped “yes” when I was showing her the app. I would never say yes to a “Prince.” And second, no thanks I’m good.

David: “OMG I can’t believe it!” At first I was like, oh no, I know this guy. But I didn’t. But it definitely prompted a response out of me. Good work, David. Too bad our conversation died with another one of your acronyms – lol.

You can use anything on that site for responses. I have matched with around 50 ppl and used "hey, what's going on? On 40 of and gotten a response all but one time.

Wanted to bring this up again as I'm curious. I've found that "Hey, what's going on?" is not memorable and doesn't work nearly as well as a custom, funny opener.

What else have you had success with?
