I am 21(new to seddit), I work at a bar/ restaurant/ dance club. I am currently a barback, hopefully soon to be bartender. Every busy night (wed,fri,sat) we have a pretty good turn out of HB's. And I usually find myself making solid eye contact with some of them, the kind I believe are IOI's, not "I need a drink" looks. I have a lot of experience getting that look and the difference is pretty distinct. Almost every busy night I end up with a napkin some girl scribbled her number onto and passed to me across the bar and said "Text me!" then immediately left. The problem is that these girls are rarely attractive enough to warrant my pursuit.

Because of the fast paced nature of the work, I can only stop and talk for a couple of minutes, although i may be able to return multiple times throughout the night. And it is difficult to actually talk to them because of how loud the music is and the fact that there is 3 feet of bar between us.

When I see an attractive girl at the bar who is making eye contact without clearly just wanting me to get her a drink, I smile and see if she reciprocates it. If she does then I will introduce myself. Usually this works pretty well and we will develop a nice yet small conversation. I usually end it with "I have to get back to work now, it was nice talking to you." Essentially being Good Guy Barback I feel like I could just as easily say "I have to get back to work now, it was nice talking to you. Give me your number and we will get some coffee some time." Or something along those lines. Any suggestions on what to say here would be greatly appreciated.

Quite often, I am mistaken for a bartender(at least 5 times a night). Someone will make eye contact, then call me over to ask me for a drink. I then in turn, say "Sorry I am a barback not a bartender, let me get you one" and then proceed to do my job. I would say that at least once a busy night, this happens with a HB in which i would like to be able to utilize as an opening. Some of them are very surprised to hear me say that I am not a bartender and will ask me my name and start a conversation, I have gotten some numbers this way, but it is rare and isn't something I can initiate. Others, are strictly in need of a drink and have no interest in flirting with the barback. Nothing turns a girl off more then mopping up vomit from the dance floor. Any way I can maintain my value when telling them I am not a bartender and # close them at the same time?

I feel that because on nights that I would normally be out at venues practicing pickup, I am always working, I need to practice at work. Also, I should be taking advantage of the fact that every time I work, I have the opportunity to hit on at least one HB7.5 or higher. All constructive criticism is encouraged.

TL;DR Whilst working, how do I best utilize my limited time to converse, get my intent across and get the number? Also, how do I turn "Im sorry I cant get you a drink" into an opening.
