I don’t really use Facebook but for text I guess I just use Hey! how have you been? :) if it’s a girl who I used to see a bunch that usually works, otherwise just mention oh this cool event I’m going to or something they’d find interesting . I’m not an expert here but I get fair results

I'd go with something a bit more direct like "Hey! What are you doing on -day-?" then set up a meet up.
Id rather catch up in person than over texts.

Yeah I mean I’m not trying to start a text convo I hate texting. But maybe they say something interesting and I can comment and then I say something like that
