I used to fill every gap and potential gap in coversation with talking. It wasn't so much a fear, but a disdain to awkward pauses. I have since slowed down, calmed down and speak clearer. When I do stop and they don't speak, I look at them and try to notice something. This is either to kino something, a loose strand of hair, or to build some tension. I found it only got awkward when one of us didn't want to be there, and the pause came out of nowhere.
The point is, you can control whether things get awkward or not. It's about being present, aware, and strong at that. It takes practice and a willingness to be in an uncomfortable situation, until you find out how to make them comfortable. It takes practice, but it's worth it.

Thank you. This makes a lot of sense, especially the part about its only awkward if one of you doesn't want to be there. But I have an anecdote and were wondering how you felt about it. So on prom, my date and I had become friends before I asked her. On the day of, I was nervous that it would be awkward. You know the usual. But once I picked her up and we started talking, it wasn't awkward at all! So what I'm saying is do you think its a bad thing to worry about awkwardness, even if it turns out there is none, because I'm pretty sure I wanted to be there.

What you're feeling is completely normal. I would go as far as saying that you don't have a "Fear" of awkwardness, it's rather a thing that you don't want, that makes you anxious. Fear is a very different emotion.
So like I said, Normal. Most guys who have Approach Anxiety (AA), don't approach, not because of the part where you go up to the girl and open, it's the part afterwards. "Just say this." And then? That's the part that doesn't register. If you are able to have good conversations with people, if you talk, and think you have something of value to say, you will be FINE. Early on I would enter conversations fighting against my body telling me to turn around on cold approaches and would go into autopilot, and have no issue holding a conversation. Some months later, after several hundred approaches I saw a HB10 French Blonde, and realised I no longer felt the heart racing, the stomach sinking and head throbbing that came with a cold approach. I had conditioned approach anxiety out of my body. If you are able to hold a good conversation in regular circumstances, awkwardness in conversations will rarely be your fault.

Raj Koothrappali syndrome. Get drinking, pal.
But seriously, you're just going to have to do it. You're able to talk to them and get the number in the first place. Start by taking them to a movie. Minor conversation on the way. No conversation during. Minor conversation after.

Alright thanks. I HAVE got to do it.
[–]game_sloth 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Out of curiosity, where did the fear of awkwardness come from?
[–]Rph23 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Not sure. I'm still in high school, so part of my fear is what my parents will think. I don't know why. One thought I had is when I was supposed to have my first date in 7th grade, my mom wouldn't let me go. Probably has nothing to do with it, but its the only thing I can think of. Is awkwardness a part of virtually every relationship in the beginning?
[–]game_sloth 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Not really. There can be awkwardness before the relationship establishes, but you won't know until you try, which it doesn't sound like you have. Just don't over think it, and be your normal, social self. Get to know her like you'd get to know anyone else.

[–]Rph23 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link
Shut up. I have plenty of friends and a great social life. I'm just asking how to get over my fear of hanging out with women alone. Nothing wrong with that.

If you are nervous at all it means you don't want to be there.
[–]Rph23 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
That's not true at all.
[–]Dynamix125 -3 points-2 points-1 points 13 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
Look you believing in it or not does not dictate if it's right or wrong. You are nervous around girls because you don't want to be around girls. Society says you should, and you're placing yourself in scenarios you wouldn't otherwise place yourself in. Stop trying to be what everyone else wants. It's beta.
[–]Rph23 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
Ok.. I want a relationship, so the first time I'm hanging out with a girl I want it to go well. That's why I'm nervous. I don't get what you're saying about society?
[–]Dynamix125 -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Any relationship doesn't go "well" because that means you are letting others decide that outcome. You should be the deciding factor on what "goes well". Otherwise you are not being yourself (which causes nervousness). And because you care, she will lose interest. The one who cares less in the relationship wins.
[–]game_sloth 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is true to an extent. You don't want to come off as completely careless, though. You push and pull. You don't push and push.
[–]Rph23 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
So are you saying I shouldn't be nervous at all when chilling with a girl for the first time that I do not know? That sounds very hard to do and seems like it would require an immense amount of confidence.
[–]Dynamix125 -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
its not supposed to take effort. thats the point. the fact that you put any effort at all into it destroys any hope of it going "well". it does not need to go "well" and you honestly could say anything you feel like and you will. otherwise she is not worth your time so stop pretending that she is
