Picture a cite girl. You just approached her and engaged conversation. Then you make a witty comment or joke and she laughs showing her teeth. You feel great and know it was sincere. Now if the girl laughs without opening her mouth two things happen: it instantly shows you that she didn't like the joke that much plus it makes the laughter sound come out only trough the nose, baffling it. Sincere smiles should show your teeth, not hide them. It may seem to you that people will notice your gums, but they won't. If you smile sincerely and make they smile as well, no one will even notice it buddy

you have a PhD in smiling or something? you said it yourself, it should be genuine. if it's not, people will pick up on that. i have like 80 different smiles, teeth-out ones make up some fraction.

What I am saying is that Op shouldn't be super conscious about his gum showing. I for sure do not know all there is to be known about anything, say, "the science of smiles". But I still hold my point that genuine smiles, if used accordingly, have a powerful effect, and that details, like big gums, matter not. Also, Op asked specifically about showing or not teeth, so I tried do address that matter at the best of my skills.

oh i know you said that, just thought you said a genuine smile should show teeth, which is bullshit

I didn't mean that, there's like 100s of different facial expressions, let alone different smiles

I'm not a pro so take with a grain of sault.
When I'm board I like to go on Omegel to talk and practice my conversation skills.
When ever something funny happens that would make me feel like smiling I just mentally increase the feeling and do a smurk/smile/laugh. So a smurk is where you smile with half for your mouth. But i then increase increase it so that it shows teath and opean my mouth the smallist but to let a lough out. I usually get compliments on my smile by girls.
If I try to smile for the camera it look unattractive hollow and sometimes creapy.
I guess my point is don't smile like a robot. Only smile Naturaly. And if a natural smile comes about then you can tweak it with the back of your mind. If you are mentally thinking "raise corners of mouth and flex eye muscles" then you are smiling wrong (in my oppinion)
Hope that helps. Sorry for bad English. Dyslexia and being on you phone are not a pretty combination

how has boosting conversation skills on omegel worked for you? this seems something like i'd like to try as you can do it from home.

It helps some. It can be a pretty big time sink because it can be heard to find someone you want to talk to and who wants to talk to you. Some times it takes me like 5 min, and sometimes it takes like 30 them I'm like ok this is ridiculous so I log off.
A nice thing about Omegel is that all the people you are talking to also want to have a conversation so they are going to try to add to the conversation.
I think it is a ok tool, but not that great. I view it more as a form of entertainment that is mildly productive. So like if you feel like entertainment id recomend trying omegel since it helps a little. But if you feel motivated to actively work on your self id suggest some other form of self improvement.
It can be fun and you can meet some cool people from around the world though.

You're thinking too much about a detail that doesn't matter all that much.
Smile if you want to. That's it, really. As long as you're being genuine, the little details don't really matter that much. Generally speaking, you're better off having a shitty, genuine smile over a picture-perfect, but fake, smile.
Maybe 2 girls on Earth think like, "oh wow he looks really happy and he knows how to have fun, but man his smile shows way too much upper gums nvm bro".
