social status - what about it? norms - what about them? sacrificing happiness to obtain social status - happens all the time in people failing to choose a career doing what they love so they can instead make $$ (a lot of lawyers, some doctors, tons of bankers, etc.). but what they might "love" more than anything is the thought of raising a family, living in a nice home, and being respected... so you can't assume that they are bad people for pursuing something that did give them fulfillment in another aspect.

if you really want to create an intelligent essay, talk about how social media has redefined a lot of new things for us - social status is now defined by things like the number of facebook friends, the number of unique text messages a person receives a day, how more employers are asking for facebook profiles, and how so many relationships are formed over the internet.

as far as sacrificing social happiness is concerned - i'm sure a lot of people feel forced to participate in some of the social media stuff to appear normal to others. also, with more women in the workforce than ever before, they face the eternal dilemma of having a career versus having a family.

Tip from highschool: never use the phrase " in todays society", it is 99% of the time redundant.
