Why don't you just call them out: "Oh hey man, you thought I was trying to pickup your girl here? Don't worry so much man, not everyone is the boogie man out to get ya ~"

If you actually are trying to steal their girl and they get all pissy about it just ignore them. It's the girl's choice in the end so there's no point huffing and puffing about it. An easy way to tell if you've hooked her is to lead her somewhere else. Usually I say something like "I'm gonna go get a drink, come with me." If she follows then it's game on, if not, I go get my drink and find a better target.

As for social circle, take into consideration that, even if you aren't trying to take a guy's girl, and even if he know this, he might still get pissy -- just because you're a higher status guy interacting with his girl. Why? Just because it plain makes him look bad in comparison. I've noticed some very savvy types who are attempting to ingratiate themselves with a given man for whatever reason actually essentially wing for the guy to the guy's girl, all without the guy really knowing/ participating. Then two people like you more: the girl for having been made to feel awesome about her man, and the guy for looking awesome to his girl. It's a fascinating technique for building alliances, and I find that I end up doing this naturally in the company of couples I like.
