Be human, act fun and joke don't be affraid to give them shit. Just DON'T act all macho and lie about what you do in the military. Be genuine gentlmen, and things might go your way.

If you can don't mention what you did in the military. Just say it was in a past life that you no longer live. (regardless of your being in uniform) I'm guessing your a guardsmen/reservist.

You are a man of experience so that should help a lot. Just be friendly and have a conversation with them. But as a man you have to do the approaching, its not the other way round.
