Museums are always a great place to go for a first date; you can engage with her and connect with her emotions as you discuss the art. Follow it up with coffee since you will already be talking and getting along.

Use the internet to find things to do in the area. Find 5-10 interesting things, add the name, address, and phone number (if applicable) to a note taking app on your phone. Take screenshots of an area map with the addresses highlighted, to give you an idea of distance.
On the date, check your phone, and say "There is a cool park ten minutes from here" or "there is a neat bar five minutes from here". If it looks sketch, say, "Not as nice as I thought it would be. Let's check out X instead".
EDIT: I reread your post. Do the internet thing, but if she knows the area, ask her about it on the date. Depending on how big or small the place where you are meeting is, she may know of some places. If it's a large city, not so much.
