If you are worried about looking casual and confident, you are never going to look casual and confident. There isn't a set time to "look around" when it will seem confident. Just look around if you aren't focused on doing anything else at the moment. Don't make a big deal of it.

As for the other thing, you're right, you shouldn't stare at her the whole time, but don't go out of your way not to look at her either. That will make you look really beta and awkward. If she is in your field of view, you can let your gaze fall on her, and go back to taking in the rest of of your surroundings. When she gets closer you can even give her a casual once over, and as she is about to walk by you can check out her face, and if she makes eye contact just smile in a relaxed way and go on your way.

Good question, I've been wondering about this too. I sometimes look at girls but I always look into another direction after like 1 or 2 seconds because I'm not so confident. I think it's pretty creepy what I do, I don't really know...
