Why do people act friendly/then cold? This has happened to me a few times.

You have a short time/interest window to work in, past that and she moves on, thinking you aren't interested in her.

It might be cause you're giving them too much attentions, try to ignore her for some days, maybe a week, if she texts you back she cares about you, if she doesn't move on.

Or as the other guy has said she got what your intentions are, so she's trying to hurt you the less possible, she doesn't feel like explicitly telling you she's not interested in a love relationship with you.

There are a ton of reasons for this. Attraction has an expiry date. Oftentimes a woman has provided you with openings to escalate and men fail to capitalize on these windows. They move too slowly. As reputation is more important to women than men, many women auto-reject to protect their ego and reputation. Internal thoughts they might be having (Well I gave him signs, I'm clearly into him. He hasn't made a move yet, I better reject him before he rejects me).

If you're sure you're not acting clingy/weird, which for some people can be hard to tell until someone else points it out to you, you might have also been to brazen or bold. If you are someone who speaks plainly, you may have offended her or challenged a belief she holds dear.

If you acted like a friend, they probably like you and they are autorejecting themselves. If you showed interest, they probably aren't interested and are letting you down easily.

Sounds to me like it's usually the first case with you.

You act distant when they show interest e.g. She texted you first and then when they start to do the same you wonder why they changed their mind?

It's especially important during first introductions and interactions as that builds their impression and idea of you for the coming time. If it's a bad impression they won't be interested in taking in the time for it to change and if it's good, it'll either settle or it won't.

I honestly think this just comes down to them acting according to how you act, so distant for distant.

This has happened to me more times than I care to count. Every time it's basically been either:

1) she catches on to me being into her, she is not into me and so she tries to give me a hint to not take things further

2) she is/was in fact into me, I didn't make a move quickly enough and so they think I'm not interested and want to move on; this is usually what happens if they are interested and you just continue acting "friendly" all the time

I think in the first kinds of situations they are still generally more willing to talk.

Judging by what you've said, I'm leaning towards the second option.
