First of all, is a great thing to know the one that you're the wingman for. It gives you the chance for to give a more specific interest in him. When helping him, don't talk about yourself, but him. That should be obvious.

When out, you should of course help him with the girls he is interested in, but try to find someone, you think he would be interested in. If you succeed in reeling a girl into his comfort zone, relax and let him be. But keep an eye on him. If he wins her interest, good. If not, go to him and wingman him to another girl. There is no shame in a failed attempt. Don't let him dwell on it. Just keep on going and going.

Most important, make sure you both have a good time.

This is from my experience, both as a wingman and going out with a wingman. It has worked for me. Could work for you (or maybe not), so maybe just try it
