Define problem. Because to me, even one man going into debter's prison is a problem. Imagine, if you will, that you were subscribed to a program that you thought would have massive benefits to your life. You receive those benefits for some time at the cost of a monthly fee. But, suddenly, those benefits are canceled, yet you are still being charged the monthly fee. When you try to bring light to the issue, you are told by the benefits company "tough shit, you won't be getting services, but you better keep paying your fee or we will take you in the night."

Then, life happens as it does, you get sick or your employment changes and money gets tight. You call the benefits company and try to at least change the erroneous fee because you just can't afford it. The company responds with " fuck no, you will keep paying your fee. As a matter of fact, you had some extra money last year so we are going to jack up the cost of your fees. Would you like to take this opportunity to pay?" You continue to struggle even though your situation is not getting better. You eventually miss a payment or two because you are stretched too thin. Then you hear a knock at the door, it's the benefits goons with a gun and cuffs in hand, ready to take you to debter's prison...

Isn't this a civil matter, though? Don't things have to be pretty fucked up for someone to go to jail over a civil suit?

Trust me, I don't think spousal or child support should even be mandated by law. The courts generally don't care when people fuck up their lives by getting married and/or having kids, so why the fuck should they get involved when the marriage ends?

Yes, on paper it's a problem. But I don't know the real-world stats to know if this much of a problem in practice beyond those rare, strange cases you see on the likes of "60 Minutes" wheresomeone gets chewed up by the legal system by some tragic twist of fate and bad actors (see that dude from The Making of a Murderer).

An estimated 2.6 million outstanding warrants for both misdemeanor and felony offenses have burdened the US Judicial System to such a degree that child support warrants receive an unfortunately low priority from the system, authorities state. This provides a certain impunity for nonpaying parents, even with a warrant issued for their arrest.

Granted this is an old article and it doesn't state actual arrests, but 2.6 million (mostly men) are at risk of arrest due to issued warrants. Sure 2.6 million is, in the greater picture, not that big a number. But I'm sure anyone in that statistic would feel otherwise. It goes without saying that the best way to avoid being part of the statistics would be to never shack up with a chick.

Edit: additionally, I've learned through family experience, that the bar to issue warrants varies by state. I had an uncle that struggled with my states family court. He was advised by his idiot lawyer to pay cash to his ex in order to appease her while their divorce was still being processed. He was promised by his council that they could back date the cash payments towards his child support debts. He was laughed out of court when he produced hand written receipts signed by his ex showing the cash payments.

At the end of the day, child support has very little to do with finding a child. It's mostly there to keep women off of state welfare while lining the pockets of a corrupt government program. They don't care where the money comes from, so long as the money keeps coming.
