The nice guy and the asshole are both needed. The nice guy is needed to be the emotional fluffer for her jerk ex who just wants to hit it and quit it. His "abuse" keeps her victim sob story rolling along nicely so that the nice guy can keep rescuing her. They're both needed. Seen this scenario a bunch of times.
It unfortunately pays to be the pump and dump a hole. In a purely machiavellian sense, white knights are a good thing, as they get stuck cleaning up all the unwanted drama and turmoil.
