There is no contradiction there: happiness for them is correlated with how much pain they can inflict on you. In other words, the more pain you are in, the happier they become. The trick is to NOT overdo it to the point where the man says "Fuck it!" and leaves. Then she might become unhappy because she just lost her wallet.

Dated one of those for three years. Never could figure out what the problem was until one day she laid into me. She told me that I was pissing her off because I was being too nice to her and her daughter. On top of that over the last three years I never did one thing to upset her or make her mad and that made her furious.

Yep that was the day I walked out of that psycho's life.

I had a gf who tried to start a scene by claiming I had “cut an eye” at her. I had no idea what she was talking about, and said so. She insisted, and I needed to appease her. I calmly explained that I had no idea what she was talking about because I had never heard that expression before, so I didn’t know if I had or not. (She was low class, almost ghetto black; I was fiscally stable staff sergeant in the USAF. Two different cultures. We met only because she worked as a civilian in my unit.) She was unsuccessful in getting anything - neither appeasement (tribute) nor fight - out of me.
