I've noted previously, the “wouldn’t it be better off to have never been born?” is not some "new" thought... it is actually an ancient (even "Biblical") question or position.

In fact several times & in several places, it is --phrased in almost exactly those words & terms -- blatantly made as a statement of FACT, to wit:

"The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." -- Matthew 26:24 (and see the parallel in Mark 14:21, etc)

So I congratulated the dead who are already dead more than the living who are still living. But better off than both of them is the one who has never existed, who has never seen the evil activity that is done under the sun. -- Ecclesiastes 4:2-3

Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. And Job said, "Let the day perish on which I was to be born, And the night which said, 'A boy is conceived.'read more. -- Job 3:1-19

"Or like a miscarriage which is discarded, I would not be, As infants that never saw light. -- Job 3:16

And the above is far from a exhaustive list; nor is the meaning somehow "out of context" it is quite clear what the portent is.
