First off, do not be discouraged because I also worked outside the IT field before I started a computer science Bachelor at age 33! I am not yet finished but I do not worry in the slightest.

Second, I am not from America but I like to read English speaking fora and people often say CCNA is great when looking for a job.

I also encountered your problem when reading through employment ads as it is the same in Germany. Someone with experience in the IT field gave me the advice to treat the employment requirements like a wish list instead of must-have requirements. People working in the HR department lack the technical expertise which is why they like to put required before a skill instead of would be great to have. I agree with this opinion.

I would apply to any job that requires a CCNA except Senior positions of course. The chance of a decline will be higher but who cares? See it as a chance to get a job and nothing more. Don´t waste hours upon hours for one application. I would rather use the shotgun principle except for the very few jobs that you really want to get.

The CCNA is a relevant exam. Its tough, at least for the uninitiated. CCNP is a lot harder, because the time limits require experience in order to complete the questions in time.

Getting started in a career also requires luck and timing. The best foot in will probably be a network technician type of position. Usually, that’s slinging a lot of cables and connections. Ask smart question, and do excellent work. It’ll take time to get to a high level.

I got my start at a small dialup ISP in the 1990s. It was a ton of work, and ultimately worthwhile. I’m more of a network architect / designer today.

My brother went into low voltage stuff. He now works for a cable / isp provider company. You might want to try that.

Also, get your hands on some vendor specific and vendor neutral routers.

Also, cabling certifications go well with that IT cert for data centers.

Also, foundation / associate degrees in your subject / expertise of choice, will make you stand out against someone who just has the cert and experience.

Be better than the next man, prove it on paper.

Ccna has little or no value. I've once hired a girl (she had a huge rack and my bff said she wasn't worth it) who on Paper was more qualified then ALL the guys I interviewed. Luckily for me the hiring was with a 90 day trial period. Had to let her go. She was making the guys do all her jobs. The guys thought I wanted to bang her and didn't reported anything.

My advice to you : invest in more classes. Get any job related to the field. Practice on friends, family, neighbors, anyone. Never for free. Spend all your free time on forums and any website to learn more. After 1 year you'll be able to find something to your linking.

Always stay away from women in tech.

Ccna is a decent start, I recommend moving into information security. Not enough truly security skilled people people out there so the jobs and money is there

Once your ccna is done get comptia sec+ and CISMP(BCS), they're what's needed to work law enforcement in the UK and US for info sec. Once you've done that for a few years move onto CISSP (ISC2) and CISM (ISACA).

If you've got this far sit your C-CISO and watch the money roll in as a C level CISO board member and play the game.

Be strong willed, confident and always believe in yourself. You'll get what you want and what YOU need.

Study computer science and programming instead: higher average salaries, less likely to be outsourced, and you actually make a profit for the company (IT is a cost center and doesn't make a single penny for the company and thus they're more likely to be shit on). IT is full of paper chasing retards who think that having 15 different certs makes them valuable.

Don't fall into that trap of thinking you're going to be excluded because of experience requirements, at least for the entry level positions you should be looking at. Apply to anything you think you can do and don't be discouraged by rejection. In addition, spend lots of time practicing interviewing. If you can get someone to act as the interviewer that is great.

Start looking at jobs and see what they are looking for and work on that so you can put it on your resume. A CCNA is nice but you need more than that. My advice would be to start learning windows and linux administration. There are open curriculum at Universities like Stanford and MIT.

Add network security to your resume - you'll need an additional course. Companies these days are all about securing their data and networks, so having that is a big plus. If you want to start low however, you could apply for a helpdesk position at a midsized company. If you show you have the skills, they'll often prefer to promote internally. I went that route myself with a job at a contractor to a local government (city/county) - started as PC installer in a PC swap project. Got hired to the helpdesk 'cause folk were impressed with my skill. Then not half a year later I was the email administrator - basically one of three network/server admins. Greatest job I've had thus far - lost it due to marriage collapsing and a forced remigration.

Still working on getting to that point again. Got stuck in a helpdesk position without much prospect... haven't really had the motivation to look for something better ever since. It pays the bills.
