That aside, say alimony isn't awarded.. the man, who is the top earner in over 60% of marriages, will still lose half his wealth, savings, 401k, and in most instances will lose his home. Also, in some States the man can be forced to continue paying his mortgage, though he can't live there, and that isn't seen as alimony.

Alimony isn't terribly common, but it happens enough to be aware it could happen. It's probably the most painful of all the divorce court torture schemes.

Even if you don't get alimony, Child support is a killer, even if you don't get either you will still end up splitting assets or splitting debt. Assume you get no future payments from a divorce, how badly would losing half your assets, half your equity in your house, and gaining lets say 20,000 in debt?
