The question arises here and elsewhere often enough. Why does it matter who the father is? Think of the children, be a good parent, what matters is that you love them and raise them. And while we agree that love does matter, I think what we need is a way to turn the question around and bring the questioner into the mind of a man who is supporting a child that may not be his.

So I ask: why does it matter when children are switched at birth? There are a few news stories every year about hospital mix-ups, whether discovered early on or later in a child's life. One couple has been given another couple's child.

Certainly if paternity doesn't matter, then mothers should not be shocked by stories of children switched at birth. All that matters is that they love them and raise them, right? So why does the mother care?
