I second kindacurious, will order the book. I wonder what she would answer to the same questions today though. I'd say things have definitly gotten worse in the last 11 years. Based on the interview though it seems that her biggest problem is with consumerism and the effect that branding had on society as well as how culture is more and more owned and made by corporations in their own , not society's interest. Hadn't really though about it, but the advent of intensive branding in the 1980s and the intensifying of it up until today (think iPhone etc) together with a change from a largly manufacturing based economy to a service based economy had a huge impact on people's lives as well as sterotypical gender values and expectations.

FTA: Men don't want to live in a world run on retail values any more than women do. Like women, they want to be needed and useful participants in society. They want to have real utility and to be engaged in meaningful work.

I think this hits the nail on the head. Too much of today's work is about money and not much else and society at large is worse off because of it. The extremes could clearly be seen in the investment banking sector since 2008 where people clearly contribute virtually nothing to society. In a study made in the UK last year (looking for link) janitors were shown to be more useful & valuable to society at large than investment bankers.

Pair the above with the fact men are neither sole breadwinners anymore nor typically have an equal role in the home and one can see why there is discontent.
