This reminds me of a fairly weird phenomenon I witnessed when I took a girl to a show in Seattle. Pretty petite girl- maybe 5 foot 4 or so. We went to go and see Built to Spill and got up pretty close to the stage- a pretty good spot. As the show went on, some people (the same selfish few that always try to ruin things for everyone) were aggressively pushing people out of the way to get up closer to the stage- people who had gotten there first. Most everyone just let them get away with it, even guys there with girls, and just put on dirty looks, until they got to me. I had basically formed a cordon around this girl and used all the muscle I needed to protect our spot. I pushed back pretty hard and everyone around me was like "holy shit! you can DO that?? fucking imagine THAT. you can defend your spot-- and it turns out good!" Pretty soon everyone was patting me on the back, and pushing back as well these rude intruders. Some other girls came up to me and started dry humping me from the side. I ignored them but because now everyone around me was protecting their spots, we weren't bothered the rest of the show.

The timing of reading this is damn near spooky, as I am in the midst of having a masculinity crisis of a sorts. Thanks mate.

The argument the author presents is this: feminists have become the alpha controllers of society and the former male alphas have decided to become beta enforcers for the feminist alphas. He then argues that this means the feminists were right about masculinity being corrupt and outmoded and that the real fight is not with feminists but with the ex-alpha, now beta, male enforcers.

It's an original argument, but with some weaknesses. Why, for instance, are feminists so blameless if they are now the alpha controllers? Why target instead the male beta enforcers?

Second, we are supposed to accept that traditional masculinity was about an exploitative hierarchy and that the values associated with traditional masculinity simply masked the oppression of some men by others.

I think that's too cynical. In fact, the dominant men in the West traditionally gave up some of their power for the sake of other men. It's not very difficult for a wealthy, powerful 40-year-old man to attract multiple wives to his side. If the most dominant 20 to 30 percent of men had done this, then other men would have had to do without.

But in the Western tradition the best placed men decided to forego this privilege for the benefit of society as a whole. Instead of a minority of older men monopolising women, all men had a chance at a young age to find a female mate through a system of monogamy.

That's how civilisation advanced, by bringing all men into a productive and responsible role within society.
