This thought occurred to me recently as I was watching James Cameron’s Titanic on cable television. The most relevant aspect of the film, to me as a men’s rights activist, was its exploration of Edwardian society’s sexist double standard against men. Throughout the story, we are shown helpless, hapless Cal (Billy Zane) being victimized by Rose and her incipient feminist ideals. By the time the ship’s stewards were at the lifeboats shouting “Women and children only,” I was beside myself with rage.

I’d like to think we’ve evolved since the time period depicted in the film, but as we MRAs all know, the feminist movement has only darkened the veil of oppression over men and mankind. Warren Farrell, author of The Myth of Male Power, understates our history of persecution when he says “Men today are probably where women were in the late ’50s.” Has there ever been a time when men were not being oppressed by females? Is there any hope for a more enlightened future?
