I was in an abusive relationship for 10 years. We faught far more than we got along. She wouldn't let me leave the house. If I touched her to get out of the house she would call the police. My kids saw everything. Day after day, year after year it never got better. She eventually left. I became a single dad to 3 young children. It has taken 3 years (and counting) of therapy to get to the point where I can talk to someone about it and not break down sobbing. Only now am I starting to look and feel like my old self. Only now am I realizing that our relationship was incredibly toxic and all the mental damage that has been done. Only now am I realizing that it wasn't me. There is no shame for a man to leave an abusive relationship. We use our kid gloves when we deal with our wives. We don't want to hurt them. But when they don't stop screaming and yelling and hitting we need to remove ourselves from the situation.

My oldest daughter a couple of days ago mentioned how we (the partents) used to hit her when she was young. I told her I never laid a hand on her. Ever. I only ever spanked my son once and that was one day after I finished patching a hole in the wall (put there by her mother when she was angry). I told my kids not to touch to patch until it dried. I came out to find a hand print. My daughter ratted out my son(who was only 2) and I spanked him for it. By the look in her eyes I knew it was her and she did admit to it. She was 5. I never laid a hand on my kids again after than. Their mother would slap them when they acted up. My oldest is also in therapy. They see their mom once a year now. Thats enough. I never bad mouth thier mother. Even though they seldom see their mom I make sure to tell them that she loves and misses them. Im losing my chain of thought now. If your in a abusive relationship get out.. They dont get better. They only get worse. and the damage takes years to undo. If it ever can be totally undone. And as a man, you're always looked at as the guitly party. I was lucky that I got help and the doctors realized what had been going on. I was actually put on disability. If some good doctors and social workers didn't take action I don't think that I would still be around today.
