this is what a 50 year old man is expected to look like to play a superhero.

A female though? well, i don't think 50 year old women are allowed to play superheros. I'm not sure if that's worse or better.

The idealized male image is far harder to attain than the idealized female image. When you look at someone like Dwayne Johnson, yes he works hard, but he also uses steroids.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger also used steroids.

Hugh Jackman is likely to have used them at least at some point in his career because attaining that level of muscle mass with body fat levels at the 6-8% range is nearly impossible natural.

There's a famous way to check if someone is natty in bodybuilding: you can be big or you can be lean when drug free. Being big and lean is almost certain evidence that steroids have been used.

So not only are the men who play our superheroes working out for hours a day and eating an unbelievably strict diet, but they're also likely using drugs that can fuck up their test levels for life.

On the other hand, women can just be in OK shape. Brie Larson is a pretty averagely built woman and she's the most powerful superhero in the Marvel universe. Scarlett Johansson is of course beautiful, but my wife who barely even works out has about the same body as her.

Just curious if this is actually true, because I’m naturally excercising and I’m packing on mass, and slowly losing fat.

Although I’m rocking a dad bod, my girlfriend and many other woman say I’m very attractive still, although I got some stretch marks on my stomach.

I feel the average woman may find those chiseled abs irresistible, woman do go crazy over confidence, a high self esteem, and muscle that’s hidden under fat.

Also men and woman are wired differently, woman can’t dip below 10% body fat or they stop ovulating, and get in critical condition - basically dieing, there abs show at higher fat %s because they don’t retain stomach fat the same way men do, and we don’t retain thigh fat the same way.

Anyway TLDR; is this true? Cause I went from featherweight to heavy weight in the span of 10 years, and right now I’m trying to lose fat and gain muscle, not just gain muscle like back in the day so the dieting has changed and I have seen results - albeit tough as fuck too attain.

In terms of attaining an ideal physique, you’re absolutely right. But as a man, I’m grateful I don’t have to shave my legs and underarms (and, nowadays, crotch), pluck my eyebrows, apply makeup, paint my nails, blow out my hair, wear a bra, accessorize and walk around in heels to be considered presentable. I’m also grateful I look good at 40 and don’t have anxiety about wrinkles and gray hairs.

People need to stop worrying so much about exercising their bodies and have bigger muscles and start worrying about exercising their souls to have bigger hearts

I agree, but growing up being the only non "alpha male" you want to earn the affection of the men you look up to as a child.

It took me years to get over that I do not need to be Hercules, and it has left scars in the form of bad days when I go to the beach and wear a shirt even though by most standards I am fit.

I am 40 now. In my 20's it was crippling to never feel "good enough". Does not help my ex-wife would rag on me if I gained a few pounds. Not in a positive caring way, either.

Body issues are not just for women and the conceited. They are real for men and women alike.

A man shouldn’t be judged by the size of his arms or the amount of money he possesses but by the values he practices and by which his life is dictated, is only after you take all those things away that you can truly appreciate the man itself, for money and possessions are volatile, and in the reign of fortune, but your life’s philosophy and thoughts are always yours no matter what. I think your issue was looking up for men who weren’t worth praising for, trying to imitate the superficial things they achieved and that don’t bring real happiness and proud to men. Maybe we need to start changing the role models we show to children so more men stop fixing their minds in pursuits that will make their lives miserables

I am a huge advocate of this, and teach my kids ro value what cannot be seen or purchased, rather what is done.

I have a chance to make their lives better, which is an oppertuinty I never had. It would just be self-perpetuating if I squandered this.

That's great in theory, but unfortunately a huge amount of male energy is devoted to attracting women, and women love big muscles and big wallets. I agree that we should encourage men to devote their lives to other things (but I have nothing against men who exercise because they enjoy it, or those who are naturally ambitious), but to achieve this we have to also reduce the obsession of men of trying to please women.

[–]FlingbatMagoo 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Even men who want to attract men experience the same physical and economic pressures.

[–]Stoicdadman[S] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's interesting. I did not give thought to attracting the same gender, but it makes sense if this "ideal" man is what you are attracted to or trying to attract. I would wager women who like women have the same problem.

This, of corse, does not apply to women or men who are attracted to the same sex, but oppsite gender roles I assume. I am no LBGTQ expert, so Ill stop here, but would ne interested to hear more feedback around this.

[–]SamHanes10 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I agree. I suppose the point is that men (and women) should be encouraged to stop prioritising romantic and sexual relationships above everything else.

Man, the guardian is such hit and miss with their stuff, sometimes its actually useful and good stuff like this, the other half its garbage.
