If I were being abused by my husband and succeeded in drugging him to an incapacitated state, I would use the opportunity to gather my most valuable possessions and seek sanctuary with local authorities or my family. I would report whatever evidence of the abuse I had, and begin pressing charges. I wouldn't kill him in his sleep and then commit welfare fraud.

I think a possible way to look at these sorts of things, is to not try to imagine them with flipped gender, but instead without reference to gender.

Here's how I would read the story without gender:

Terry Tully has pleaded guilty to defrauding Centrelink of almost $80,000 while living with an accomplice, Quinn Quagmire. Terry is hoping to avoid jail time, arguing that, "Quinn forced me [Terry] to commit the crime".

Terry made headlines when a court ruled that Terry was not guilty of murdering Quinn after the jury agreed that Terry was the victim of years of sustained abuse and bullying.

Terry claimed to have acted in self defence by drugging, and then shooting Quinn in the head.

Terry is now using the same defence lawyer to try to avoid jail for fraud.

Defence barrister Riley Rollercoaster told the Southport Magistrates Court that Terry lied to Centrelink to claim $78,284 in benefits between 2001 and 2006, because Quinn forced Terry.

Prosecutors are pushing for Terry to spend three months in jail, with the sentence due next Friday.

That's my attempt at a genderless article, actually a bit of fun trying to write up the whole thing without pronouns. When I read this article, it looks like poor Terry didn't have a whole lot of options, because Quinn sounds like one scary person. Of course, this is assuming that the murder was actually justified, which I'll take as given, as a personal choice.

Unless, you know, a jury of her peers accepted that she was so afraid for her life and the life of her children that killing her husband was an act of self defence, and that due to the abuse he inflicted on her she was not capable of leaving him or killing him while he was beating the crap out of her.

Once you accept the killing is justified, the defence of compulsion is obviously available for any acts where she can prove that she was compelled by her husband to do them.

Oh, and you've failed the basic reading comprehension test:

Now when she is facing jail for welfare fraud, she blames her now dead husband for that too. Killing a defenceless human being - by virtue of drugging them - is bad enough. To then use the same person as a defence against future crimes is abhorant.

It says clearly in the news story that the welfare fraud was from 2001-2006. She killed her husband in 2006. There is no 'future crime' here.

Why is vigilantism a valid excuse for murder?

Also, did anyone else originally think this was going to be about Mary Winkler? I'm also shocked that battered wife bullshit worked a second time.
