the man was naive. he shouldve kept the lottery ticket until everything was done and over. then, afterwards he couldve gone and taken the money. lottery tickets usually are valid for many months, sometimes even years to come. i have heard of cases where they are valid indefinitely, but i think that was in a country, where it isnt considered lottery legally, but more like stonks in a company. if you win, it is an earning, like a pay check, which will always be valid, just like money is, or stonks.

I'm not so sure this would be a pass considering they were still married when he purchased the ticket, which means the money he used would belong to both of them, therefore the winnings belong to both of them.

How is it stupid? There is not much information. Depending on the laws of the country, a husband and wife own stuff in common. I'm guessing the "divorce" proceedings were not sufficiently advanced so that their economies were separated. Until there is more info, I'm gonna keep my indignance in check.
