You guys think it would have been the same if the girl won the ticket?

[–]willbeonekenobi 88 points89 points90 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

nope.

This is a bit different but https://www.reddit.com/r/pussypassdenied/comments/a6nxg5/wife_won_13_million_in_lottery_didnt_tell_husband/

This pleases me

[–]extraaccessteam 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes of course it would have. Keyword is during. They were still married.

[–]ghetterking 78 points79 points80 points 7 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

the man was naive. he shouldve kept the lottery ticket until everything was done and over. then, afterwards he couldve gone and taken the money. lottery tickets usually are valid for many months, sometimes even years to come. i have heard of cases where they are valid indefinitely, but i think that was in a country, where it isnt considered lottery legally, but more like stonks in a company. if you win, it is an earning, like a pay check, which will always be valid, just like money is, or stonks.

She could have gone after him even if he claimed it after the divorce. The event of winning happened before the divorce was finalized, so she had rights over half. It sucks, but it works both ways.

Now, if he took his time and claimed it anonymously if possible, or through a lawyer, or planned an escape with the money to live hidden away somewhere, she could still try and go after him, but it would be expensive and possibly fruitless for her.

[–]ghetterking 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

the real problem is that she found out in the first place. that shouldnt be possible without him telling her, or rubbing it under her nose. if he just waits for a good year or so for things to cool off, then go for the money and keep it low key, noone would bat an eye.

or if he‘s really crazy he should‘ve immediately given it all to charity, kickstarter or gofundme or patreon or whatever. if she never gets a whiff of the money, she wont know of it and therefore cant make claims for it

[–]lashleighxo 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

FWIW, You typically get six months to claim or your forfeit the prize.

[–]ghetterking -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

that‘s good enough. i‘ve heard of cases where you dont even need to go anywhere or to do anything public (because obviously all the thugs in town would want to rob you)

[–]lashleighxo 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Some states require the winners names to be released, but some don’t. I think it would have just depended on their state. Also, some states require a separation of a year before divorce can be filed. Lots of arbitrary rules for these things :/

[–]ghetterking -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

fair enough

[–]Slythiechick -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's a way around getting a winner's name released though, but it involved setting up a trust for it, which might not help in the divorce hearings.

[–]systemshock869 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Some states doxx lottery winners automatically.

[–]ghetterking 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

wow now that‘s creepy

good that i dont live there, not that i play lotto, but it‘s just a bad precedent

[–]systemshock869 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Definitely. Kinda bizarre really

[–]HelmutHoffman 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not really. They used to keep it anonymous until everyone found out the jackpots were going to company executives. Now they announce the winner so everyone knows it's not just a scam.

[–]systemshock869 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That does make sense I suppose, sucks to be doxxed though. I've been told to claim winnings in a neighboring state that doesn't do that if I ever won.

Remember kids, marriage is buying a house for someone you hate.

Ok I'm a girl, but even I have to agree to the fact she don't deserve that money!!! Like really the women in these posts are ridiculous!!! Gawd what's the world coming to?

[–]LSamaDhi 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey girl, I bet you're cute, I wish I could hug you

[–]ket_ludlow 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So wait. Literally just by knowing this person in this situation he has to give her money? Fuck off outa here.

[–]pyrobryan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm not so sure this would be a pass considering they were still married when he purchased the ticket, which means the money he used would belong to both of them, therefore the winnings belong to both of them.

[+]xdzgor -13 points-12 points-11 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

How is it stupid? There is not much information. Depending on the laws of the country, a husband and wife own stuff in common. I'm guessing the "divorce" proceedings were not sufficiently advanced so that their economies were separated. Until there is more info, I'm gonna keep my indignance in check.

[–]JakeDC 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I read another article, and you are basically right. Under the relevant law, marital property was common until the final divorce decree. The judge just applied the law.

I mean assuming it’s 50/50 split, he still gets $15mill so I got no sympathy for him lol
