Don't do petroleum engineering, the field is saturated and there is little work to be found, and if you do, it won't be as profitable as you've heard. I would go into another engineering field like mech or electrical.

Get a job at IT doing networks or web stuff. Also helpdesk, you know, running around to the lawyers who pressed the scroll lock key and don't know how to get their keyboard back to normal.

And I shit you not, I did this. Also got on with a lawyer chick as a bonus, bossing them around on computers gave me some ascendant on them.

Computer skills will also help you later.

start getting good at things you're interested in by applying yourself and reaching out and networking with people and making yourself available to work and learn. browse reddit and other forums related to your intended field of study and work.

worry about stocks later in life when you have cash and better connections.

do they have summer-sales in europe? like, pest control and home secury systems? friends of mine have made 50k in a a 4-month summer by doing door-to-door sales for companies like alterra or vivint.

i became an entrepreneur before i had any experience and it ended up sucking. i ran a window washing job for a year. $1000/wk, but miserable. now im back in the workforce doing sales and hoping to become more and more unplugged/freelance in the coming years with the new skills and experience i'm developing.

The best way to get a steady stream of passive income with very little starting cash is to publish articles and sell ad space on them. Try infobarrel.com. They give pretty good rates to writers.

Hi, at 17 you are at a great age, your questions shows that you are capable of introspection which is always good.

I would highly recommend finding out whether you are really good at programming. Take few courses on Coursera, or Udacity or even few tutorials at Codecademy. For those who are good at programming and start early (17 is the right time) its extremely easy to make 100 to 120 K a year (Circa 2013) right after your graduation in Computer Science. (You can also make serious money by doing internships along the way and taking freelance jobs if you are interested.)

The ideal path is to do an undergraduate degree in a local university in Netherlands (which I assume is cheap), and then a Masters degree from a Top CS school in United States (Stanford,CMU,Cornell,UIUC) (your starting salary is twice your total tuition). This preparation will put you on an ideal trajectory for starting a company to joining quant trading funds etc. by age of 22 - 23.

While petroleum engineering is interesting career, as someone with background in both, I would highly recommend computer science. CS offers a much better lifestyle, easier transition into management, and the locations SF, NYC are much better.
