I can actually use an example from my own life.

I work in an environment that can kill you if you don't respect it. I wear a set of devices that helps keep me safe, and you have to sign in and sign out if areas. The device can be worn outside the area, but usually you return it when leaving.

I had left the area because I had forgotton something outside. Convention is that you can go back for small articles if it's under 5 minutes. So, I left and a pretty co-worker passed me. We exchanged heys, and then she turned around and told me I forgot to put the device back.

I was in a hurry to retrieve my thing due to a time sensitive task, and simply said that I knew what i was doing. Afterwards, I tracked here down.

I told her that I had been short with her earlier, and explained what had happened. I told her I appreciated that she had caught what might have been an error on my part, and thanked her for looking out for my safety.

I could have handled that by saying I was a huge dummy, or by apologizing profusely, or by any number of ways that basically dropped my own value. Instead, I continued my work, and then sought her out to explain, and then thanked her for her actions.

Its the human condition to warm to people who self deprecate, no one likes the " im so awesome " guy who is always telling your stories or whatever that paint him in a positive light.

Provided you don't go too far and always do it, people who laugh at themselves or jokingly paint themselves as incompetent are likeable. People who don't are seen as unlikeable.
