It is my thesis that the twentieth century until now has seen a cycle of sexual political shift. From the days of women's sufferage to the advent of the cougar-MILF there has been two stages: dominance, and blowback. I will use the most recent cycle but the idea has seen permutations several times. It is a cycle of the balance of power between feminine and masculine values and who is controlling the culture.
In the 1980s the American culture was a very boys only club. Women had gained many things from the 60s and 70s dominance of feminism but the blowback was in full swing as men asserted the blowback by shutting women out of corporate encholeon. The culture of the time reflects this with films like "Working Girl" and "Tootsie". The culture celebrated machismo films and music hence the careers of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger,etc. Politicians promised a swagger of beating communism with our bare hands while Margaret Thatcher adopted a thoroughly Red Pill attitude. The feminists and women's rights activists did what is a feature of the blowback cycle and laid low. They hung their flag to types like Anita Hill, Imelda Marcos, Madonna, and Jessica Hahn.
Then the dominance cycle launched in the 1990s. This cycle has two parts: rising and declining. Suddenly culture was dominated by what Adam Corolla called "Oprahfication" and"Rosienomics". Feminine values such as political correctness, safety above all else, and the buzzwords "Family Values" came to shape the culture. Feminism praised Loreana Bobbitt, Hillary Clinton, and Lillith Fair musicians irregardless of the moral implications, while demonizing Bill Clinton, Amy Fischer, and OJ Simpson (once again irregardless of the moral implications.) Big action stars were passe, literature was conquered by, for, about women, cheating politico witch hunts, and athletic disgraces.
The declining portion of the cycle bled into the millennia. This cycle is colored by overreach as feminism goes to far. Shopping to battle terrorism, the center stage for "pop tartlets" like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, and "shut shaming" everyone from Janet Jackson to Tiger Woods. During the decline masculine values are not only oppressed but openly vilified while ironically adopted by feminists. This causes them to begin to turn on themselves all while despotically enforcing conflicting feminine social traits. We see this in news programs like Nancy Grace, The Housewife reality shows, the extremely virulent witchhunts of Johnathan Edwards and Elliott Spitzer that made the 1990s hunts seem congenial, and the pavlovian salivation over the DC Madam. For males during the decline there is utter culture-shock as females shift the rules of proprietary to suit not their agenda but their whim.
Currently we are in the early stages of blowback. Contemporary males are doing what has always been done at this point of the cycle, vehemently criticizing feminine values. The culture now is embracing those who say enough is enough like the stand up comics Bill Burr and Patrice O'Neil. Politicians (always following the shifting winds for the worse) are speaking about curbing women's rights in their ambiguous way. Women themselves are rejecting feminine values such as the rise of the gamer girl and the blowback to the disingenuous adoption as seen by gamergate. Fifteen years ago the film "The Expendables" with it's unaware celebration of 1980s machismo would have been inconceivable for studios. The feminists are gurgling their last gasps before they start laying low by criticizing all criticism and stating it's all based on blatant misogyny. This is seen in "the nice guys of OKCupid", the over inflated storm by some ignorant hick saying "legitimate rape", the Rolling Stone snafu and Duke lacrosse team. As they try to reassert their lost ground feminists will eventually go dormant until the rising phase of the dominance cycle. And it will come.
In conclusion the cycle of dominance and blowback is an interminable clash of feminine and masculine values for control of the culture.
