Importance of Self Perception
Summary: Having an accurate self-perception and understanding about what influences us is something we must be aware and capable of if we desire to be successful.
What is Self-Perception? Perception is the process of selectively attending and assigning meaning to information. Our perceptions are a result of our selection, organization and interpretation of sensory information. Self-Perception is the way you interpret yourself, it consists of your mental image and value you assign to your skills, abilities, knowledge, competencies, and personality.
Why is it Important? Self-Perception directly effects how we talk to ourselves, the way we present ourselves to others, and our ability to communicate competently with others. If you have a distorted self-perception you may make inaccurate assumptions about others and yourself. Having an accurate self-perception and understanding of your value is vital for success as well as being able to perceive others accurately. When you swallow the red pill your self-perception changes drastically, you are able to perceive information that most people are unaware of and effectively assign meaning to that information. Your interactions, communication and self-talk are made conscious and refined. Furthermore you become better acquainted with your potential and your value as a man with ever growing hobbies and talents.
What influences Self-Perception? Self-Perception is often defined by the media we choose to consume. This is why when you consciously decide to change something in your life it is important to disconnect from certain media that is influencing you. For example, shortly after the incorporation of the red pill I made the conscious effort to block out media I suspected had been influencing me and fueling my blue pill tendencies.
Cultural norms play a critical role in shaping our self-perceptions. Self-perception can be distorted and magnified through self-fulfilling prophecies, filtering messages and media images. Growing up I was always told that the perfect girl would come by if I stayed true to myself, if I was nice and merely acted ‘myself’. This idea was perpetuated by various movies and films where the unlikely hero seemingly by chance ends up with the perfect girl and saves the day. As a result I ended up creating various superficial narratives for myself, I would think to myself: “I’ll leave some flowers and this note in her locker, when she figures out the riddle she’ll know it was me the whole time!” People tend to pay attention to messages that reinforce their self-perception; they downplay or ignore messages that contradict their understanding of something. This is why blue pill men often have these perfect images of women, they are oblivious to the fact that they are pedestalizing because they don’t understand themselves, they don’t have accurate self-perception, they don’t realize that they are valuable and or have the ability to make themselves valuable and so the loop continues.
Conclusions
- Self-Perception is the way your perceive yourself, the subconscious value you attach to your skills, abilities, knowledge, competencies, and personality.
- Self-Perception is the unofficial term for the dynamic method in which we intake, process, evaluate and assign meaning to information.
- Your self-perception may be influenced by media and those around you, becoming aware to and understanding what influences you is one of the first stages in discerning the world through a red pill lens.
