I don’t. It’s kinda hard no to, tho. I have extensive education in music theory, composition and history. Plus for half my less than boomer life I’ve performed. I know a thing or two.

Think of it like a chef. They go to school. They study what foods go together. Spices, sauces, techniques. Watch one of those videos where they have like 50 average joes do simple kitchen tasks like cut an onion or cut up a pineapple. Any chef in America makes them look like infants. Now, imagine you have someone on that level over for dinner. You make spaghetti. You boil noodles, fry meat and open a can of sauce. It’s a fine meal. Everyone is feed and no one goes hungry. It’s fine. It does the job. But the chef isn’t a dick about it. They are polite and thank you for The meal. They are actively enjoying the meal for what it is. They aren’t picking it apart to be mean, but they are going through the flavor profiles and noticed how done they noodles were and if the meat was too salty because that’s what they were trained to do. They’d spend all day on sauce and make their own sausage to go with it and make their own noodles because that what they do. Is their meal better than yours? Hell yeah it is. Do you like it as much? Heck no. It’s weird. There’s a bunch of spices in it and the sauce is weird. The noodles have an odd consistency. You prefer your spaghetti. His is objectively better in every way. It’s like Coors light or some weird west coast double IPA. Some folks like their beer consistently made and right at or slightly above sub par.

Most mainstream music is made to be sold. It has a face and a name. A genera. A community. Conformity. There are outlying artists, but they are few. I can enjoy them much like a bud light at a baseball game with an over priced shifty brat. And it is what is. I just wished people were more realistic about the value of artistic merit or genius they put on artists like T swiftness or that 69 guy. Or shit JeeZus, jay z and Beyoncé... not generally that good. You and to a lesser extend the Infantilism of our media made them better than they were. Inaugurations don’t hurt I suppose.

I’ll leave you with this. I noticed it when I worked at a record store. Most music you hear on radio, tv or in movies is like baby food for the ears. It goes in easy, it’s easy to digest, it’s non threatening and safe After a while it starts to all feel and taste the same to the point you can’t decide if it tastes like apple sauce or apple sauce or apple sauce or apple sauce or apple sauce or apple sauce...

I’m coming up with my honest truth and not at all trying to flex. Are you familiar with like guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai or progressive metal of Djent? Or maybe concert soloists? They slam a to. Of notes down and it’s technical prowess is second to none, but yeah it’s kinda meh right? Listening to an entire dream theater album is taxing like a whole slayer album.

I get off on that cock rock just as much as an old greatful dead live jam or a credence of Neil Young solo. Those are cool, because they are raw. Shit m, free bird is one note for like a min. They have passion. It’s like a overloaded freight GH rain going to fast, the solo could literally come off the rail at any moment. We are just hanging on for dear life.

For me, the common denominator for music is substance. If it’s got no soul, it doesn’t swing, it doesn’t groove etc it’s a no for me. When I’m sitting in a lobby waiting for modern warfare and I’m being subjected to the latest sound cloud rapper that genuinely doesn’t have anything interesting to say I shift to spaghetti from a jar. It is what it is.

I also understand my audience. Not everyone wants prolific challengers. Not everyone wants early Kendrick m. That want lil xan welcome to the party. Some people want to space out and just have fun with music. And that’s ok. But being an active listener and wanting to be part of the experience requires me to be challenged at times, and I turn to... a more complicated or multifaceted art form. It’s like watching the matrix vs the avengers. I like them both at different times.

Again. Objective vs subjective. Active vs passive listening. I listen to some very embarrassing music. Remember the offspring? Pretty fly for a white guy? Good tune, right? Very safe.

And to the other guy, I was just playing. I wasn’t trying to cut you down and take a shit on your music. We can part and listen to music about the party. That’s what that music is for.

That’s pretty interesting you largely don’t like modern art as much. I’m super impressed with new art. It doesn’t move me as much as Rembrandt, but here wee are I guess.

I think the way history tracked music from like 1920 through rock and roll got us through American idol and the voice and other shows to the point where we are now. I think you are like most people where you need or at the least preference music with lyrics over instruments. Which totally valid. It’s easier to instantly identify with the lyrical content or even the voice itself. Vocals are the most human part of of music.

And reality singing shows give everyone a certain amount of clout. It’s easier to objectively talk about a singer too, right? When Simon says someone sucks on a show, it’s really apparent. Granted, if someone sucks at guitar like a 14 year old playing at guard center you might know.

After the 90s and 00s it seemed like everyone had an option and thought that it mattered. In 2020 every dead SoundCloud raper is a genius. Which I think is kinda sad. We moved the goal post. The standard for greatness is less now than its ever been. Mediocrity and safety have replaced the renegades of funk. Music and lyrics are too safe for me nowadays. I get it; it’s easy. If you have a voice, it’s easier to identify with vocals than oboe or bassoon, right?

For me, personally, I need the band to be super tight and reasonably resonate with me, then I move to the vocals. I look at them as an instrument. I evaluated them objectively and then move to lyrical analysis. I think maybe I’m a bottom up approach listener. As where, some people I know instantly go lyrical content, then voice, then music or band?

Absolutely, it's incredibly plain and boring otherwise. Instead of the snobbish "interpretation of the message" and only the most primitive emotions, you have a full story, whether it's imaginary or real. You can fit a person's life into a song or stretch a moment out. Instruments don't have any of that, they don't have a real soul.

Face it, most artists were always incredibly mediocre and overrated, even among the "legends of rock".

What are some good artists I should check out?

Tbh I mainly listen to Russian ones, English doesn't give enough space or options for something actually good most of the time unfortunately. Partly cause of the structure, partly cause of how long the words are and how they sound. The only ones that come to mind rn are "never", "message to Tina Belcher" and "Ayala" by xxxtentacion.

I'll put this simply for you:

Rap is using the cheapest ingredients to make a cheap dish that usually tastes horrible.

Post classical music is using many different unnecessary ingredients to make arguably excessively lavish dishes.

Bach uses the least ingredients possible to create the cosmos. You can get as much in depth or surface level with his music as you want. It's the best there is, and has not been matched by any other composer.

That’s why I don’t let them around my TI-84 plus. It’s like go back and learn trigonometry, you noob. You just wanna play my games.

On some level they are kinda right. My music theory instructor, PhD, went so far as to say the great composers you know of only because they used 15 seconds of one concerto or symphony were so technically proficient in their virtuosity, no composer alive today can rival their mastery of music. The deepest level of music they reached will never be touched again by anyone. The crucible that was their time was like Jedi special forces camp for composers. Heck, Mozart’s dad beat the fuck out of him if he didn’t play up to par. I think the last great person that saw that kind of focus was MJ, and he’s a drooling window licker comparatively.

I always laugh when someone is referenced as a genius. Be humble isnt genius, it’s clever and catch. Little red corvette? Annoying, repetitive and dumb? Catchy and timeless for people that did blow in the 80’s and you know what? Those people write articles. You know who else writes about hip hop? Everyone on Snapchat. Objectively, I don’t like classical, jazz or hip hop better than the other. I’ll get down with Bach or Childish.

But to argue that 1700-1800ish composers were not the finest that ever was or ever will be is a little short sighted. I wouldn’t say ignorant, but some would.
