TL;DR - When dating, looking for FWBs, hooking up, etc, is it better to be up front about wanting to keep things open and not be exclusive, or wait until you can make sure there's actually something there first?

I ask because in the past when dating or pursuing girls, I've been up front about my nonmonogamous intentions, but this has seemed to limit my options greatly. It seems that certainly when pursuing casual interactions there may not be any real reason to label myself in those terms because I'm assuming most FWBs are not exclusive anyway (otherwise that would be strange). However on typical dates, or when wanting to see if a girl would want to become more serious, it seems that my options are: 1) Lay my intentions out ahead of any interaction for the sake of total transparency and exclude potential options who may be open to the idea later once they get to know me more, or 2) wait until something definitely looks like it could become more serious and bring it up then (like third date material, etc) so as to develop a connection before revealing my (nonconventional) intentions. The downside with this is that I might just waste time pursuing someone who may be disgusted or totally weirded out by the idea when I could be potentially looking for someone who is open about being okay with it up front.

So basically, it feels like my options right now are: be up front and limit my options from the outset, or wait until it becomes clear that there is potential for more and bring it up then and risk the whole pursuit being a waste. Thoughts, seddit?
