This is not a good way to begin with pickup, it is advanced game. If your skills aren't up to it, you are likely to be frustrated, which isn't going to help your AA. Making it a competition isn't going to help either.

What you're proposing is known as "street game" and you are trying to open moving sets. Since you are trying to stop a moving target, the approach tends to be more aggressive, which requires a fairly high level of skill to not scare them off.

If this is one of your early exercises in pickup, I'd suggest starting with an easier setting.

Use the "hover" method. If at all possible be in the general vicinity of your target when she is not moving. Pretend to be looking in the general area for something as well and spark up a conversation. Situational openers almost write themselves in this situation. Once you've opened then it's game as usual.

It's good practice because it's hard game. I try my hand at it on days I'm feeling brave, but the other posters are right, in that it's challenging and can tear down your confidence easier than other locations.

Grocery stores seam to be best as I think our culture kind of romanticises this scenario. Asking for cooking advice is usually a good start. Preferably about something she's eyeing (and thus your eyeing it too) "what do you think goes better with chicken? brown rice or white rice?"

Walking in the opposite direction in a mall can actually be the easiest. Pick a store on the opposite side of the mall (behind you someplace) stop her and ask her for directions. She'll tell you your going the wrong way and now you have an excuse to turn around and walk in the same direction she's going. You've established a time indicator because she now thinks your only walking with her until you get to your store. the only downside is she might judge you based on the store you chose, so choose wisely.
