I think preceding the post with “though let’s agree that the phrase in itself has a negative connotation that can easily be interpreted to mean all masculinity is toxic” sufficiently acknowledges its bias. Acknowledges, but doesn't fix. You telling us you're about to do something wrong doesn't mean you didn't just do something wrong. If I called it “zygync,” do you think people would be more keen on discussing it then? Might. But you didn't. You ran with a term you'd already acknowledged would i…

MLK did so much good without violence, even when people weren't listening to what he had to say. What you're missing here, I think, is that MLK Jr. was a figurehead who accomplished nothing on his own. He sat on the shoulders of many others, and there was always a threat of massive violence or at least noncompliance if pressures weren't released. A rattlesnake's rattle accomplishes a great deal without violence, but only because we know what it means if it's ignored. A dog's bark accomplishes a …

The people that hand out these (god-awful, completely stupid and utterly idiotic) cards are still people too, and as unnatural as it may seem, we need to treat them and respect them as such. Sure - but I suspect you're confusing "treating people as people" and "respecting people as people" with "being nice." Respect doesn't mean wearing kid gloves - respect means treating them as people who should know better, who need to know better, and have allowed themselves to ignore the nicer feedback they…

Read through her twitter feed. Mostly bored. Like, not even mad. Just bored. I'm listening to a random selection of odd thoughts about merch and tomorrow's video. I want to do a parody of @ArianaGrande’s song and make it “thank you, sis” and talk about all the dope af women who make waves in the world. But then also, who tf has vocals like Ariana. Imma just sit down and continue eating my cereal. Bye I'd like to be creative but instead I'll pander to women.

So yes, people think it happens. That's all I'm writing about here, to demonstrate that according to this survey, at least 76% of people think it happens. Someone wanted to know where the number came from, so I dug into the survey and found the source for OP's claim (even while presenting it with a caveat). I'm not making any other points. My point here is this: according to this survey, at least 76% of respondents believe false rape accusations occur at least occasionally at work. That's it. Th…

You are combining two things that are occupying different polls. I'm not certain I am. As far as I can tell, this is one question, and respondents had mutually exclusive choices of the two options you present. If you don't think the major problem belief and the minor problem belief belong in the same question, that's one thing, but both major and minor problem respondents believe it does at least occasionally happen. Which are the two different polls I'm combining?

I think it remains to be seen, but Trump becoming president will end up being disastrous for him personally and economically. Kavanaugh I don’t know, but the presidency will take years off Trump’s already precarious life if he doesn’t simply die quickly in prison.

In this figure, 31% of respondents say false claims of sexual harassment/assault are a major problem, and 45% say that it's a minor problem. This only makes sense to me if those 76% of respondents believe that they do at least occasionally occur. I don't know if we should make this about the whole US population, but the number doesn't seem to have appeared out of thin air.

Should he come out unscathed though? He's clearly a liar, regardless of the validity of the accusations. But he's going to suffer for those accusations, and I'm being told he should suffer for those accusations by the mere fact that women brought them, so I don't think we can disregard them. I'm talking about the accusations of serial gang rape, the rape on the boat, and the assault of Dr. Ford. One of these I'm certain he didn't do, the other I'm skeptical of, and the last I don't have enough e…

No, and in fact I allude to the possibility that he's guilty, but my argument is that whether guilty or innocent, he's not coming out of this unscathed. I'm talking about the effects of accusations (true or false), and how people around me "believe" accusations before they're even aware of the content of those accusations, and how that kind of mob mentality is pretty scary. Fuck that. Get consent first.

I know that Kavanaugh's hearings aren't a legal trial, but legal standards are pretty good decision-making tools when there's imperfect information and a lot at stake. But I think writing this means I'm a rapist.

If I spoke about "greedy jewishness," it would be correctly argued that I was making a hidden argument. I'm actually just talking about the Jews who are greedy, though, so I can't be held accountable if you think I'm playing on stereotypes. Neener, neener. Never mind that reasonable people would wince and suggest another phrase, unless they really enjoyed the plausible deniability this one afforded them.

Just went on a rant about this among my friends. Told them that if a post contained "white" or "male" and wasn't about some practical piece of work they'd already done to make the world better (not just online advocacy), then they'd be silenced until the election cycle was complete, when they'd hopefully get back to normal. It's insane, how regressive some progressive folks can be.

This is rough, because nobody's perfect, and if you go looking for faults in yourself you'll find them. I'm pretty sure you're already familiar with them - it's a rare person who is completely ignorant of his faults. So someone cheats and you go looking for why you suck, and you have this list of things that's wrong with you, and you're wondering which one of them justifies what just happened. None of them look bad enough, but I guess that denial is another one to add to the list.

I'm now refusing - usually with a plausible excuse - to be alone with two women who've been willing to use "sexist" and "creepy" as if the accusation were funny. Other than "racist" or "rapist," there is not much worse they could say about a guy in a professional environment, and I believe the "jokes" are a step towards normalizing the language. I'm gay, which is no longer protection. I'm not sexist. If we're not fucking, I only care about what's between your ears, not legs. I have worked with s…

The problem is that people insist on creating problems when there are none as a method to bolster their flagging self-worth. They don't build themselves up (i.e. go play in the mud if that's what they really want). Rather, they tear someone down.

If a dog digs in your yard and you say the dog is being a dog, I have difficulty imagining, like... a marmoset feeling slighted. Unless, of course, the marmoset has a bone to pick with dogs and apparently finds it intolerable to hear "dog," never mind the rest of the sentence.

I was drugged. She was worried I was going to get dehydrated and handed me a bottle of diet coke. It wasn't the worst experience of my life, but being drugged when I didn't know I was drugged wasn't the best experience either. She was getting me ready for her friends and said she'd bring me back when I was ready. I actually think it'd be worthwhile to let women have the positions of power they want, and then to demonstrate to themselves that they're just as human as everyone else.

being described as “creepy” by former employees. I don't think women understand this. It's just one step below "rapist" to be called "creepy." I once called an unborn child of unknown sex an "it." My female coworkers told me I'd said "he" and that it was sexist. That was terrifying in itself - they either misheard or lied, and on that basis called me sexist. I clarified that I'd said "it," and was informed that I was creepy for doing so. I got a full lecture on the singular "they," which fuck yo…

Asian countries are not even close to ethnically/culturally homogenous. I'm genuinely not sure, at least compared to the experiment we're doing here in the US. It's my understanding that ghettoization is completely acceptable in most Asian countries. If you put the entire country into a statistical blender it might look heterogeneous, but on the scale I believe matters, there's not as much pressure to integrate or even interact. What are the words I'm looking for, if they're not "homo-/heterogen…

This is what blows my mind about my leftist friends. They _love_ Asian cultures, never mind the fact that they're largely ethnically/culturally homogeneous except for occasional events when they trot out traditional dress of subgroups that they'd never actually wear. I mean, China just keeps bulldozing Tibet, but our Chinese coworkers don't get a tenth of the shit the white man does. And Japan is so kawaii, but like... fuck the Ainu or any black person who tries to live there and not be a token.

I think you're confusing "why does this happen?" with "how can this be justified?" Both answers are obvious, but I think you're insisting that someone give you the same answer to both questions, which is never going to happen. It's not justified, but we know why it happens.

Is there like, an authority who I can ask how far men have to fall before we can be considered "not privileged"? It'll occur when we've long gone on with our own lives, and people realize they maybe shouldn't have been shitty, 'cause now they need some metaphorical jar opened. We'll once again be ok when it becomes clear that - far from abuser, oppressor, misogynist - the average guy was actually decent, helpful, and always just wanted to live his life fairly.

There are so many men that I adore more than life itself, some of whom will probably be slightly offended at this article, but this is not about them, and I hope you can realise that. If you are a good guy, you shouldn’t feel threatened by acknowledging that a lot of your brothers are not. When I say “men are trash” I am certainly not talking about all men, I am talking about John Doe, and the concept of masculinity. This is the failure of all similar displays of righteous anger - John Doe and t…

It's so hard for me to not see stuff like that and just not develop an "us vs them" mentality. Feminism in 2018 isn't about helping women, it's hypocritical and made for women who want to take power from men and switch roles. Not for women who want equality. This morning, driving home for lunch, I'm listening to NPR. And once again, it's about identity. Women in politics. I try, I do, but when my preferred news source is All (Black) Women, All the Time, it really just no longer serves its purpos…

I work near silicon valley and I have a number of professional friends that used to hit up the whole office for Friday after work drinks. Men and women doing the work and life thing together. Almost categorically they now say "friends only" instead of "whoever wants to come" because no one wants to have their life ruined. Friday night drinking events were my bulwark against loneliness as a divorcee in the American Midwest. But somebody with well-advertised progressive tendencies joined the group…

encouraged to be [...] self-serving I still don't understand what toxic masculinity is, if this is it. Every image of masculinity I was given was about heroic self-sacrifice for the sake of everyone around you. You're a man, so die bloodily for somebody, or work yourself to death at a desk job to support your family, and that'll be the basis of your manhood.

The problem--or at least the issue I have with it--isn't women having their own thing, but it's how male victims, especially of female-perpetrators, are often left out of the sexual violence discourse entirely. And worse, how sexual violence is often framed in the discourse as something men in general are responsible for in some way This is the difficulty I've been having recently. I don't tend to bring up having been drugged and raped by a group of older women, but there has been a lot of press…

Just make them aware that circumcision is an option and can be done later, with anesthetic, if the man wants it. Oh, you don't have to do that now and it's irreversible - just let him decide and it can be done in a mostly painless way if he so chooses, when he's like 18 or something.

Sorry to rant. Also, not sorry to rant. They don't hold it against me for days or months. This is the one that really makes my blood boil. The software I use changes quickly. New, faster functions have been introduced. Some of the newer stuff is broken in ways we don't really understand, so I have a tendency to use the older, slower, but better-tested basic functions. Every fucking sentence starts with "well," or "actually," and everything we say is scanned for the slightest deviation from preference so that I can be interrupted and corrected. One thing I've learned is that this fear of noise and anger and chaos is distinctly American. It might be common elsewhere, but it's definitely not common everywhere, and some women elsewhere not only tolerate it but seem to love it. I watched a Russian woman and an Italian woman yell at each other in a hallway for a good five minutes, like one had just run over the other's child, and then at the end realized they'd been deciding on dinner plans. I thought they were going to murder each other, b…

Having had a dick for a while and having experienced ... enough dicks to be able to form what I think is a decently defensible opinion, I can attest that it does differ in form, function, and that cut guys often have difficulties that intact men don't. I don't understand why there has to be conflict between men's rights and women's rights. It doesn't have to be. But when the women in my life are casually sexist, it is. There are two kinds of people I've met - #1) those who explicitly identify themselves as feminists and end up talking about how stupid men are and #2) those who just get on with their jobs and work well with me on our shared projects. [T]here are a lot of great men, great men. And let’s celebrate them, let’s be grateful for them. This is the thing for me - a lot of people who feel free to judge would never deliver a compliment for, say, not raping a drunk partner. Or going out of your way to help a foreign student. Or being sensitive to a woman's safety concerns. Hell, the same people who judge the gender will never say "you know, men as a whole have been pretty decent." There is no direction to go but down.

It's this last frame that bothers me. It does turn on whichever man has made himself available. It doesn't matter if you're an ally and have gone out of your way to be supportive and well-informed. You'll get a full dose of this, which in any other situation would be aggressive and hostile sexism. Not even sure I want to try any more.

She said that she had been sexually assaulted the week before, but didn't think police would believe her. "Something did happen just didn't happen how I said and I feel like a jackass," she is quoted as saying in the affidavit.
