My mom told me this multiple times back in the 90's, among other things. Her life goal is preventing another woman from blocking her access to my resources.

Rich people create jobs as much as a bucket sitting outside creates water. The demand for the good or service is what really creates jobs--the rain in this analogy.

Imagine what she'd look like if her skin were transparent: like an anatomy chart of muscle on a skeleton with fat over top.

According to the actual CDC numbers, it's about a 53% divorce rate after 20 years. I sent the statisticbrain website an email a couple of months ago that their numbers on this are wrong. They still haven't changed it. But of course, you should approach random webpages on the internet with skepticism by default, even ones named "statisticbrain".

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. 94% of people getting divorced within 10 years would be quite remarkable. I looked up the study that page claims the data is from. Here's the direct numbers from the study on the CDC's website. In 1995 50% of their marriages survived 20 years. In 2010 it was 52%, still about the same. In both time periods 2/3 of marriages made it 10 years. If you look at the PDF the numbers are summarized from, there are additional tables, including all th…

Yes, your 401k account or pension is an asset that gets split just like a bank account or a house.

Delete everything you can and all your friends from your profile before you delete or deactivate it. The temptation will be smaller when there's nothing left to return to.

Invest in a company (do research and buy a stock). A company grows itself and may pay a dividend too. A lump of metal sits in your shelf. When you go to sell it, it will be the same size. What it is worth is what you can get someone to pay for it when you need to sell it.

I did a study abroad to France 10 years ago. One thing my friends and I noticed is how nicely women dressed to do stuff as small as going to the grocery store: dresses, nice hair, lipstick. Also there weren't any fat people. It was strange to come back to the US and see people wear sweatpants in public.

You'd typically take 12-15 credit hours per semester. That usually means about 12-15 hours per week of lectures, labs, or discussion sessions. Typically 4 or 5 classes of 3 or 4 credits each. Depending on what the schedule is you might have a few hours here and there between classes on a given day so it's not like 5 days of 3 hours of class. Usually classes are MWF or T-Th. The T-Th sessions might be 90 mins or even 2 hours whereas the MWF classes would be like 50 mins or 1 hour. I usually had c…

Yeah, my mom enlightened me. I'm the oldest kid. Looking back it felt like all I was to her was a high-achieving school kid she could stroll into school and feel entitled about. Then a well-educated young adult at a decent university. Then once I graduated from grad school she pushed me to buying a house ASAP. When I changed jobs into a good company and career that I'll likely retire from she then gave off the vibe that she could finally die happy. On the one hand, good parents want their kids t…

Cancelling trade deals isn't very good. If limiting trade worked, then places like North Korea and Russia since a bunch of sanctions were put on them two years ago would be ahead of us all. Trade deals bring additional customers to the companies of your country at the expense of unskilled jobs although the decrease in numbers of those in the last couple of decades is mostly due to automation. If we put barriers in trade, unskilled jobs aren't going to come back to the US (if new factories are bu…

At the end of the week I get a sandwich and something pasta from the deli at the grocery store and I look forward to that and it keeps my diet on track the rest of the week. It's very important.

I started investing in '11 back when the S&P500 was in the 1300's so things have been pretty good. A normal recession starts at a 10% decline and those happen every couple of years. If the S&P is at 2275 right now, we don't know if the 10% decline is going to happen at like 2300 (and go to 2050) or happen at like 2800 (and go to 2400-2500) which would still be higher than now. I have a wad of cash that's just sitting and I just can't pull the trigger yet. Reasons stocks will go up: The GOP wants…

ETFs like SPY or IVV or VOO are better than mutual funds for that. The expense ratio is lower for ETFs because there is only a computer behind them that keeps the stocks in balance rather than having to pay a human to do it and the tax situation is more favorable than a mutual fund. The mutual fund can do stuff that triggers tax events for you even if you didn't do anything but hold it for the whole year. And actually SPY was the original ETF and has "cash drag" compared to IVV or VOO--SPY has t…

I'm an engineer at a power company in the Midwest. The trades should definitely be an option! The pay for linemen and gas men is about $40/hr with opportunites for ample OT.
