I sometimes look at my competitors websites to check out if their photogs are doing anything better, but they aren't :P As 69x had mentioned in an earlier post, you don't want to be shooting slower than 1/30 sec if you're shooting flashless otherwise you start hitting motion blur. Bumping up the ISO and having a fast prime allows you take in more light to make shooting at 1/30 possible flashless. However, with a flash, a shutter speed of 1/30 sec is simply too slow fast for nightclub photography…

Out of curiosity, specifically which rebel do you use? From my lackluster experience with the XTi (unable to get a lock even with the 580 EX II's AF IR assist beam), I may have prematurely sworn them off...

One question: Doesn't your lens affect what you can focus on much more than your camera body would? Unless you're talking about issues with ISO not going high enough to get pictures without camera shake, but a flash would eliminate that problem. You can switch from manual to auto focus on the lens, but for Canon bodies, your ability to auto focus is based on the camera body. (I've got manual mode down, but manual focus still is something I need to conquer.) The 50D has more cross-hair focus poin…

I use a 50D, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L, 580EX II, and Gary Fong Lightsphere. I got rid of my XTi because it couldn't get a focus lock on people in the dark. I recently upgraded from the Canon 17-40 f/4L which can still take some pretty sharp club photos if you're looking for a budget lens, but you definitely need the 580EX II to compensate for shooting with a higher F-stop. The key thing in nightclub photography is manual mode. Shoot with a slow shutter speed (1/3sec-1/8 sec), lowest F-stop, and ISO …

So as a hollywood club photographer, I'd like to say a couple things 1) You can't just barge into any club with a DSLR and expect to get in without a hitch. Get to know the General Manager's of the club or the Promotion Companies before you start or they won't even let you in the door. When I first started, I definitely BS'd my way in before, but if you tell them beforehand, you'll save a lot of time later and you might get paid for doing it. 2) Do you really think a laminate media pass is going…
