My personal perspective is that words should say what they mean. So “men’s rights” sensu stricto should be about legal and moral rights, about reforming the laws and policies. I also think there is a useful distinction between “Activist”, “Advocate”, and “Supporter” (or “Ally”). I’m fine with the term “men’s rights” when used in its literal sense to refer to a subset of men’s issues that can be presented from a human-rights or equal-rights perspective. I don’t like seeing it generalised. I also think the distinction between “activist”, “advocate”, and “supporter” is worth retaining. Would love to see “men’s liberation” reclaimed from the white knights. Men do have oppression from which we need to be liberated.

I agree that the terms can poison discourse. But “sexism” is broader than the hatred/dislike/disdain for the “other” group denoted by mis-ogyny/andry. Sexism could be believing that women are better at X and men are better at Y. Benevolent sexism toward women and girls is dual-edged: it confers benefits but removes agency. One can like women/men but still be sexist about them. It also bothers me when the -ophobia terms are used for negative attitudes other than fear (e.g. contempt, dominance).

I use the terms “macho” and “machismo” to denote a specific subset of masculinity. In the hope that we can expand masculinity to include a broader range. IDK, I was never into traditional masculine stuff like sports. Had plenty of male and female friends at school and university, but didn’t really have any sense of cameraderie outside my immediate circle as those people were often bullies. At work you have to keep your guard up, with both genders. I do wish there were more social spaces I could access outside work, both men’s and mixed. Dunno if it’s happening in other spaces, but on YouTube a lot of folks on the right appear to be using “Marxist” = “anything lefty that I don't like”. If the sender is a minor, then they’re not legally mature enough to be held responsible for that. It’s illegal for an adult to forward the picture though, because adults should know better than to deal in child porn. (18 year old hard cut-off between child and adult isn’t realistic, but the law has to draw a line somewhere.) I would consider myself trans-inclusionist in theory, though I haven't met any trans-men IRL. Online, I do feel challenges with some trans-activist and "trans community" angles.
