In the USA, you must get an apprenticeship if you're getting into the trades. Apprenticeships are VERY HARD to find and VERY COMPETITIVE to get into. You may be competing against 300 different people for one slot. Do your due diligence. Maybe things are not that bad in NYC. Or maybe they are worse.
