Having grown up on American shows, I can also say I was greatly misled. It took me a lot of painful mistakes to figure that things in real life are very different. I had some friendships with women in romantic relationships, but they were always two faced. In the end none of the experiences we shared together mattered. I didn't have the misfortune of working with female coders yet, but I have listened to them talk, and I was struck by how much they're focused on gaining a consensus, while avoiding any actual technical details. So it seems men are more focused on the actual coding, while the females liked talking to each other.
