Her friends, her family, her therapist. For two years she created a narrative to support leaving while pushing anyone who had anything to do with our family and marriage away. In the end she trotted out this fully formed story which cast her as the hopelessly victimized woman and me as the evil villain. The problem is the story was a mile wide and an inch deep. It didn’t stand up to even the most basic scrutiny. When she realized this she started throwing out patently, demonstrably false accusat…

I’ve wondered about this. I’m 52 and only have 1 daughter and she’s 21. There isn’t a scale that goes low enough to measure my desire to parent some other guys kids. I’m at the beginning of the divorce process so dating is a long way off but I still think about this.

I went through 3 years of her slowly pushing me and our daughter of her life. The fact that my marriage technically ended 3 years ago doesn’t make it any easier now. She left our home on Mar 11 and filed for divorce the same day. As I type this I can feel the panic and adrenaline flooding my system and my heart rate speeding up. She is now an entirely new person. She abandoned our belief system, is bitter and spiteful, basically a person I don’t recognize and someone I would never be attracted t…

I’m sorry you have to wade through this. It sounds horribly painful. It takes a lot of courage to see this kind if behavior and still be able to be open and honest about how you feel. I came home to divorce papers and an empty house on Mar 11. This week I learned my ex is on the apps dressed provocatively and looking for “no strings attached”. It’s heartbreaking and it’s thrown my fight or flight response into high gear. How does that check with what you’re feeling? Breathe into that pit in your…

From where I stand I can’t imagine a scenario where I could trust or be vulnerable with another female.

In my case it’s she refuses to take any accountability whatsoever for the failure of our marriage. Life is much easier when you are the victim. Two years ago she stopped taking her mental health meds and has since pushed everyone out of her life including our only child. I’ve given grace until it hurts and I’m at a point now when that tank is empty.

Buddy, you have no idea! I mean, the reality is I’m going to be fine financially regardless. But it’s amazing how little that matters when you take into account the emotional carnage. At least 3x a week I want to fill a duffle bag and disappear but I know there’s nowhere far enough to outrun this disaster.

Good gawd, $700K? Mine waited until I sold my company and the bank account was flush then packed her shit and filed. I fear I’m seeing my future.

So strange to read these stories and realize I’m not the exception but seemingly the rule. I know your pain. She strung me along for 3 years until I sold my company and then emptied out the house and bolted. I knew in my gut at least a year ago but resisted and I regret that now. If I had it to do over I would have taken a deep breath and jumped. You can do this.

I think it’s really personal. I’m not divorced yet, but looking ahead for it’s not having to live with a person who abuses prescription drugs, drives drunk, lies and gaslights me and generally makes me sad.

I had a friend who used to say ‘the only people who will screw you over in life are friends and family. If you can avoid them you will be alright.’

My two cents: Don’t talk. Listen. Smile. File. Anything you say will be repackaged and fired back at you by her lawyers. It’s not a marriage anymore, it’s a negotiation and the first one to talk loses.

My heart aches for you. These are the dark days but as hard as this is to believe, you are not alone. Many of the people reading your post know this pain and will answer if you send us a message. The feelings you’re having are normal and expected and you’re still taking care of your son which means you’re doing better than you think.

It’s 3:26am as I’m reading this because I woke up out of a dead sleep angry about all the signs I had missed. It was there as clear as the nose on my face but I chose to ignore it. Now here I sit, utterly alone and bewildered and missing the person who checked out on me two years ago but I was too blind to recognize and react. I know the hate.

I really appreciate your post. I’ve blocked her everywhere. One foot in front of the other.

I really admire your honesty. I can identify with the swings in my feelings toward her. Tonight it feels like white hot rage. Thanks for sharing.

Wish I had instigated. I had a distinct impression she was lining me up for a blindside divorce but she swore she wasn’t it. I was a sucker.

You’re probably right. Some days I can live with it and some days are really challenging. I’m doing the best I can with what I have. Thanks for sharing.

I feel for you. Keep reaching out. I’ve actually found the sharing and support happening in this community to be very helpful. I’m also near the start of the process. Some days are minute to minute, other times I find some buoyancy and can float a little. Remember the old adage about idle hands? If I’m sitting in one place doom scrolling, the pain is only amplified. I’m right there with you. You are not alone.

This really resonates with me especially the metaphor about looking at the old path. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve struggled with motivation since she bolted but a new hobby is a good idea. The hardest part is reimagining a life without her. Why is this so goddamn difficult? Thanks for sharing

She moved out Mar 11 but the last 2-3 years have been rough. She completely changed into someone I don’t even recognize and then blamed me for everything. I’m still struggling to make peace with what she’s become and the choices she has made. Thank you for sharing. The support is needed and so appreciated.

Interesting idea to have a funeral for the person she used to be. Mine completely transformed into someone I don’t recognize and really don’t like. Thanks for sharing.

Speaking personally I’m not sure I’ll ever outrun the memories. Having said that the last three years were hell on wheels. She has transformed into someone I don’t even recognize and would never date. I need to make sure I’m seeing her for who she really is and that takes love off the table.

My non-drinker wife turned her back on our church and started to mix alcohol with prescription medication. It went on for months. She is 100% not the woman I married.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve found peace as I have stopped struggling with uncomfortable feelings and instead reached out in that moment to share them with someone supportive. Even if you just open a Google doc and write them down, it helps dissipate the pain. I’ve come to know that much of my pain and hurt stems from an intense desire to control something that is completely beyond my control. You can do this. Minute by excruciating minute you can make it through.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
