These are horrifying tales. I can’t imagine having to support someone’s existence for years to wait for a court date. Shudder worthy stuff.

Sounds like she may have you over a barrel on the bills. Sucks. My wife threatens me with financial stuff all the time. But we haven’t divorced yet. She filled. We’ll see. Anyway, if it’s not like a ton of hours just do it. And tell her ‘there you go, love’. Avoid any crap that can be charged to you.

She was hot, good in bed, came from a good family, had a good job and we had fun together. And I wanted kids that came from a stable home. Fast fwd to now: dead bedroom, different values, bad with money, different philosophy on some aspects of child rearing, constant insults. The philosophical differences are the deal killer. And the insults. And I’m not without blame. Would I remarry if I get divorced? Maybe. With an iron clad prenup. I’d never Financial expose or tether myself again.

Hard to say, not knowing the final interaction between you. If you are over everything, emotionally in control and don’t feel you’ll lose that control (make a scene, etc) sure, why not? If you aren’t over everything, are still hurting and feel potentially prone to outburst, victimization (women are manipulative), decline. I’ve slept with at least 1 ex girlfriend where we had a horrible breakup. Not a good idea, mind you. But by then, I was completely over her. She proceeded to ask about travel a…

Congratulations on the divorce. She sounded like a nightmare. How did you get the court to prevent her from drinking while she has your done? What evidence did you use that she couldn’t drink responsibly?

Get a good counselor. There are tons of bad ones. Get Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson. It’s good. And the find a counselor that follows her philosophy. It worked better, almost, for us.

This. The ‘time value of money’ says a dollar today is worth more than a dollar 10 years from now. Some smart financial type can do a discounted cash flows calculation for OP and tell him at an assumed investment return, what is an equivalent offer in today’s dollars. Then cut that by 25% or more, because OP is giving her ‘certainty’ where as if he dies, get’s a new job, other she’s out of luck as another poster stated. It’s all a negotiation. Ugh!

Who knows? Definitely a symptom of a bad relationship. And more likely to kill it than most other things. People feel betrayed. But if both of you had affairs, you can always call it even. If there’s reason to stay. If not, split.

Sure, go for it. There are tons. Plenty of fish, Match. Walk on the wild side, if you like. There are older and younger women who probably have the same view. Just be clear on your boundaries.

Because not being willing to marry limits your long term partner choices, is I think the real reason. Usually we meet someone and they pressure us and ‘everyone else is doing it’ and so we do too. Plus the Judeo-Christian dominated country perpetuates it. Mind you, I don’t think marriage is bad. It’s like a dog: you have to neuter it. That device is a prenup. It neuters the ability of the government to bend you over while your STBX humps away. Top shelf gals who can marry a millionaire aren’t go…

This. But also I was weak and came from a single parent home with no guidance. My son will be trained. Marriage isn’t bad. Marriage without a solid prenup is suicidal. A horribly foolish step. But that’s hindsight.

From what I see, women do a far better job of leveraging their network of friends than guys do. And they chatter amongst each other offering words encouragement, which we as the SO would likely cringe at: you deserve better, he was an ass, you’ve done the right thing, etc. and they will do this even if she cut off your arm with an axe. “It happens”. “He made you”. But it must be recognized that these affirmations are helpful to the listener in moving on. Very. And they do coffee, and identify in…

Take it in stride, bro. If you aren’t paying alimony and giving up half of everything you own, you may have gotten out lite.

Thanks for this. You make several great points. I am not blameless and at times my wife is the heroine and in fact good with the kids - helps with homework, books their camps, etc. I don’t see a situation where the kids need to be ‘gotten out’, per se. She just hates me, is bad with money and has polar opposite values along certain dimensions, some involving child rearing. Not lack of values, mind you and not really worse. Just different than my own. That leaves us often in conflict and its take…

If there’s still affection, by all means pursue counseling. 10 years is roughly an eighth of your life expectancy. Pragmatically speaking, it’s an incredibly long time for an unhealthy relationship to linger. I’m in a similar situation, with islands of closeness added in. My own reflection is that letting an unhealthy relationship fester this long has only deepened the resentment on both sides and undermined the happiness we both could have achieved alone or with another. Merely out of a combina…

Thanks for the thoughts. I actually find in my working and personal experience the ultimatums tend to cause polarization more quickly than a softer approach. Yes, timing is less than ideal: the best alternative was a pre-nup. That ship has sailed, so I am where I am. Is there a material advantage to filing first?

I’d try a trial separation. Only because you have a child. Were it not for that? You should be gone. Unless affection isn’t a priority for you.

That’s a chunk. Would you be exposed in a divorce or pretty even on asset split?

Yup. She’s lawyered up. But it’s been a while. We share a ‘kids first’ view.

I give her a check every month and tell her to bank her paycheck. That amount is on par with alimony, when considering the cost of divorce, increased taxes, 2X the HH expenses, etc. Also, the terms would be generous, just not as generous as the government might do. 1/3 or half 1/2 as of today, minus kids college funds and what I brought into the marriage. No fight with lawyers, just amicable dissolution on a timeline we choose. No trauma for the kids, no having to figure out living arrangements,…

The one thing I note from my evil wife and her demon friends is that they are all incredibly supportive. Leave him, ruin him, yada yada. Tough love has utility, but not over a question. And fair enough on the echo chamber.

Wouldn’t it be easier to leave the sub than to just kick people in an emotionally vulnerable state? Maybe a bit of pent up hostility in there <tap tap>?
