I think there's a less visible value too, besides social/professional class and income. The successful older men marrying hot 21 year olds have as much maturity and stability as their new wife. The difference is she's more likely to grow up than he is. Money is a lot, but it ain't everything. Would any self-respecting woman in her 30s be interested in that kind of man? Nah. There's an idea that older women are bitter about younger women "landing" these men, but the truth is we can see he's no pr…

It's basically the belief that in a heterosexual partnership, the woman should be investing more of herself than the man. That's the short of it.

This site was SPECIFICALLY created by a self-confessed bitter scrote using biased data: https://www.indy100.com/viral/female-delusion-calculator-bitter-man Even if you set your standards at the lowest possible it still gives you like 2% and calls you delusional. Jokes on them, all it tells me is that dating isn't worth the effort.

I am so sorry this happened. I hope that you can find an opportunity to reclaim this activity in the future.

My friend is female and has a sister, this mother treated them like garbage, neither of them want kids.

I know my entire life has been dedicated to how best to manipulate the poor hapless men around me, no other thoughts in my silly little female brain! Every gesture is calculated. Getting a job? To manipulate men. Spending time alone? Must be scheming. Going out with clothes on? Carefully calculated to ensnare men. Rejecting men's advances? Basking in the glory of my evil power as I destroy all that is good and pure in the world. Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Oddly, her husband is more of a benevolent sexist type and says things like "women are the better sex" and stuff, and has argued with her about her misogynistic opinions, but then he also turned a blind eye and didn't protect his daughters from her, apparently considering it "her" business somehow.

Goodness, so many MILs like this! What observations have any of you made regarding their sons? I wonder what kind of son this woman is raising, I feel so bad for any future partner of his.

Thanks ladies, your insights are welcome. There are definitely better ways for me to spend my time, and I have been. When I recall what OLD was like when I WAS trying to find a decent man (I know I know, looking for gold in a cesspool), I remember how exhausting and demoralizing it was. If anything, my opinion of men has improved somewhat by staying away, so maybe I just forgot how awful it is. And I thought maybe a relative lack of interest on my part would make it more tolerable somehow. But e…

The only time a man broke up with me (and not the other way around) he was in a full on moving-in-together-and-getting-a-dog relationship with his "yeah she's flirty but its just joking around" "friend" two weeks later. And yet he somehow made the breakup MY fault which threw me into an existential downward spiral for longer than I want to think about. Trash.

I've had men demand (politely ask, beg, etc.) that I tell them what they "did wrong" and I almost never tell them. It's none of their business what my preferences are, anyway. I don't owe them that information.

Interesting! I haven't thought about it, but is it possible for men to level up? It seems like it's pretty rare and there's not much incentive.

To a foolish woman, a man's compliments inform her of who she is, but to a wise woman, a man's compliments inform her of who HE is.

Sadly this is only slightly exaggerated from lies I believe in my early twenties. Isn't this apartment so nice, his friend helped him decorate!

Don't be so insecure, it's his sister's she stays over sometimes! Did he say sister? He meant his really good platonic female friend, he calls her sister because they're that close. They even used to date, but they broke up. Recently, yeah. Well technically they called it "taking a break" or maybe they didn't call it anything and she's just visiting her mom in Ohio but that's pretty much the same as breaking up, they had a big fight before she left. He didn't mention her to you at all and hid al…

A guy once got mad at me for not letting the server take a plate that I wasn't done with, said that I "embarrassed" him. He said it wasn't classy. Meanwhile he had a girlfriend at home. Asshole.

Just like dick, potential and "ideas" are plentiful and cheap. Execution is what's rare and valuable! I've met so many men who are full of great ideas and experiences and potential and tell me ALL about it, but they haven't done jack shit. It's almost worse than the unaccomplished man with NO ideas at all, because these creative idea-men seem to think they've really accomplished something with their brainwaves.

Good point. I'd say about half of the men I dated in my 20s were porn-obsessed, a few watched only occasionally, and a couple never. The ones who did were definitely more manipulative and objectifying. I've quizzed male friends on how male porn consumption has shifted: gen X fondly recalls the occasional Playboy mag or slow-loading internet images, Millenials hid their online porn consumption from their parents and gravitated toward more taboo and bizarre fetishes as part of the overall curiosit…

Even the things men ask for in dating profiles reflects this:" I want a girl who is warm, friendly, and happy to see me. Somebody spontaneous who wants to go on adventures with me. Loyal, likes to cuddle, loves steak. Doesn't take herself too seriously!" Congrats, you just described a golden retriever. How wholesome.

Yes, I'm sure none of us EVER hear that we need to lower our expectations or we'll die alone, good thing somebody made a tedtalk about it. /s Meanwhile "die alone" isn't remotely scary to me, not anywhere near as frightening as "live with somebody who abuses you" or "be abandoned when you get sick" or "feel alone yet never have solitude" or "be gaslit for wanting validation, love, and consideration". Good lord I'd rather have a hundred cats and work in my garden and knit for orphans to the end o…

Yeah I think there's a kind of comfort in keeping it simple: men want sex and a sane woman to be nice to them, women want a man to be a generous provider and good father. Cool for those people, I hope they meet each other and fulfill each other's expectations. Am I a monster for wanting an intellectual and emotional connection with a like-minded human being who I can build a life with? The comparison to a loyal pet is so true: men who love their dogs. They love the dog even though it's an idiot …

It's a strange article, I can't tell if it's tongue-in-cheek or not. If it's humor, it's VERY dry. My impression of it is a satirical sort of "TL;DR: You're not married because you have standards, ambitions, emotional range, and self-respect, but if you manage to self-lobotomize yourself you might find love!" If she's serious.... then yeah, yikes.

Thanks for this post! As a woman approaching middle age, and not planning to have kids, I think about this often. There are the things I want, there are things men might want, and then all of that interacts with societal expectations. I spent most of my younger years "dating like a man" because what I wanted was mostly sex and warm bodies. But as I get older I crave the novelty of being treated well, and being loved and respected. I don't use FDS as written since I'm not looking for a father of …

I think I saw it explained like this once: imagine you walk into a room full of giant cats you've never seen before, and most of them are trying to paw at you and stare at you. And then there's this cat in the corner who is just chill (it's because it's allergic to humans, but you don't know that), and its fur looks soft and inviting. Who would you cuddle with?

I agree with the sentiment, but I feel that this is a case where the onus is on us to make posts of a more positive nature, if that's the kind of post we want to see more of. And it's hard! It's much easier and more cathartic to retread the same "look at these terrible men, stay vigilant" content, and it serves an important function, especially for newcomers. Can all of us that want more positive content go ahead and try to contribute that positive content over the next week?

It's pretty simple: A man is either a predator or he's not, a woman can decide to preemptively assume he's a predator or can assume he isn't. This leads to four possible situations: Correct positive: he's a predator, and she takes precautions (result: safety) Correct negative: he's not a predator, and she doesn't take precautions (result: safety) False positive: he's not a predator, and she takes precautions anyway (result: his hurt feelings) False negative: he's a predator, and she doesn't take…

That's not a red flag, that's the thing the red flags were about: a shitty and selfish behavior. This is a good opportunity to reflect on what red flags there were leading into the relationship that will help you avoid being subjected to this awful experience.

Another thought to add here: it is hard to break old habits, and it is hard to start new ones. Experts on habit-forming recommend a different path: modifying existing bad habits into better ones. Like for a smoker, gradually switching to sipping water or taking exercise during the same times they might be taking a smoke break (results may vary lol). You already have a particular behavioral habit and a certain mental pathway that is well-trod, something you automatically do. Breaking it is hard, …

For me, when I'm in a situation with another person that feels like it's going toward some sort of decision that may be influenced by my people-pleasing habits, I almost imagine another me, sitting at home, doing whatever it is I do when I'm completely alone. What would she say if I called her and asked for advice right now? She has my best interests at heart and isn't concerned about this other person, she's not there to see him smile or hear what he has to say about it all, all she knows is th…

I grew up with emotionally abusive parents who explicitly taught me that I must adapt myself to others and their needs. They never worried about me, my needs, or what made me happy, only about how I could serve and assist others. I was praised for diplomacy, being sensitive to others' needs, being polite, deferential, and making others feel good. They did encourage personal achievement, but it was always in the context of "men love accomplished talented women". Like my entire purpose was to make…

I'd say you have enough self awareness here to solve this: you know how you behave in a certain type of situation, you know that said behavior causes regret, and the situation is easily avoidable. So: don't drink with strange dudes. When I ovulate my libido kicks into high gear for a couple days, I get the urge to pounce on almost any man remotely attractive. I only identified this pattern after starting to use a menstruation tracking app that projected the day of ovulation (and in my case happe…

The thing that got me is that she *did* CoMmUnIcAtE! It said so in her post! She told him she didn't like it as soon as he did it! And yet still everybody was admonishing her to CoMmUnIcAtE more! The guy didn't listen to her, and then all these people didn't listen to her either. Because they don't care. It's all about the dude and him getting his rocks off and women have to be GGG about everything.

Nailed it. I didn't realize how broken my mother was until she finally had her first son after having daughters, the contrast in her parenting was spectacular. And as we all grow up, everyone is dealing with psychological damage, and my younger brother is turning into an LVM brat just like his enabler dad.

Honestly, the only way I've been able to get this through sometimes is saying, "Well, would you appreciate that scary looking dude over there to tell you how much he wants to stick his dick into you? Is that a compliment? Just because I happen to be heterosexual doesn't mean I welcome all male attention, just like you wouldn't welcome it. I am about as interested in that guy as you are, maybe less."

Yeah I can get a dick pic easier than a man can get nudes, I don't really count that as a gendered benefit to me. It's not validating unless your self esteem is so low that street harassment codes as a compliment. And I am so done dealing with men who pretend they just don't understand all this. It's not rocket science.
