Final Decree Issued TodayWe negotiated a certain amount of money to be paid for 6 months, in lieu of spousal support or her having claim to my assets. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/10/22 03:54 PM
It’s Almost OverI don’t see a relationship. I see a lot of middle aged white men with not a lot of prospects. It’s also very quiet in terms of tourism right now. Surprising, but that’s my observation. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/09/22 02:55 PM
It’s Almost OverYou file based on your marital status on Dec 31 of the year. I did offer to split the tax savings, but she’s making an emotional decision that is financially worse off. | /r/Divorce_Men | 22/09/22 04:16 AM
It’s Almost OverShe wants the dog enough that she's willing to accept less in the settlement. It does cause me pain, but with tens of thousands on the line, unfortunately the right decision for my future self is to let it go. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/09/22 05:56 PM
Marriage falling apart, not sure what to doRegardless of whether there’s infidelity, you’re no longer wanted in the relationship. Her dishonesty is on her conscience. What you need to focus on is yourself and getting out of this situation intact. There’s no need for unnecessary confrontation. Save that for your therapist. You have been handed the perfect time to get out. You don’t have children, so you won’t be tied together forever. You both have money so splitting things should be fairly straightforward. Imagine how much worse this wou… | /r/Divorce_Men | 10/09/22 03:36 AM
Divorce advice CaliforniaMy first marriage had immigration components involved. There was much less drama than yours, and it ended much sooner, but I think you’re going to be OK. DM me if you want more details on that. You should be able to file uncontested given it’s likely that there’s not much tying you together. You have the best read on how to bring this up, given you know her the best. I would vote for ripping off the band aid, right after changing all your passwords and building up a legal stash. | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/09/22 11:25 PM
The five-star rating for divorced menThe greatest value of being divorce is getting over the magic of being married. In the Midwest, there’s an insane amount of pressure put on middle class white people (I’m not white) to be married and have children by a certain age. More so if your peers are church-going. It’s not just a marker of success - it’s THE marker of success. Going through the post mortem of why my marriage failed, I now realize how much peer pressure I was under to get married to the woman I was sleeping with. Plus, the… | /r/Divorce_Men | 03/09/22 02:42 AM
What is the point?Go for a walk around your neighborhood and think for a minute WHY you’re stressed over the house. If it blew up while you were on your walk, nobody got hurt, and the insurance just paid out the market value, how would you feel about that? | /r/Divorce_Men | 02/09/22 02:39 PM
I am open to having another child...I’m only half joking about that. Given some of the numbers thrown around by the upper class posters of this forum, male surrogacy is absolutely cheaper than alimony and lawyers. | /r/Divorce_Men | 01/09/22 08:00 PM
I am open to having another child...Male surrogacy starts at $100,000, plus 18 years of childcare. If that amount is too rich for your blood, consider if your genetic material is really worth propagating, or you might need to adjust how you think about your worth to women. | /r/Divorce_Men | 01/09/22 06:18 PM
Divorce after 4 months of marriageRetain a professional ASAP to do what he said. You stand a very good chance to go walk away from something just half a step worse than a bad breakup. | /r/Divorce_Men | 01/09/22 05:43 PM
What is the point of a lawyer?!If your transfer to her is only $3k/month on a $200k annual income, and you have almost half custody, you are way ahead of the curve. The value of the lawyer in this case is to make sure that arrangement becomes airtight, because I’m sure many people in this forum would take that deal in a heartbeat. Sorry you have to pay off a leech. Be grateful it’s not a life changing amount of money. | /r/Divorce_Men | 01/09/22 03:21 AM
The EntitlementI’m not sure I understand your protest. Would you not define marriage as a formal mating arrangement? My read of history seems to indicate so. | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/08/22 05:57 PM
The EntitlementThe practical steps a man can take to mitigate those issues and find meaningful relationships might look something like this: 1. Do not be involved in anything serious with someone who is not your economic equal. 2. If you’re a computer engineer, start working out like a football player. 3. Understand that if everything falls apart, you’ll be splitting 50/50, so do not accept any partnership that is not 50/50. All of the above goes against the historical male mating criteria of: big tits big but… | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/08/22 04:56 PM
The EntitlementI’d like to add some observations to help the discussion. 1. Women are hardwired to seek providers. For most of human history, providers looked more like football players than computer engineers. 2. Women have more economic power than ever before. They make up over half of medical school graduates. 3. Family law was written for the worst case that could happen in 1920s where a man could just walk out on his family and leave the wife and children destitute. Put all those things together, and you … | /r/Divorce_Men | 31/08/22 04:52 PM
STBX pushing mediation back again 🙄Hang in there and keep sharing as you need to. I got my court date for end of November, so one way or another all of this ends then. I am worried about her dragging things out until mediation in early November, but it sounds like she’s going to send an offer sometime sooner. Cautiously optimistic, as there’s no custody issues involved. Just tens of thousands of dollars and a dog. You’re can afford the loss. It’ll be worth it. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/08/22 07:43 PM
little pick me up?I have a court date on the books, so it’s a relief to know one way or another this is going to be sorted out by that time. No kids, thankfully. But she took the dog (I had even before we met) when we separated. That brings a wave of sadness every now and again. I’m now in better physical and mental shape than ever before. My weight is back into healthy BMI. I’ve cooked great meals for myself in the regular. Just this year I got my scuba and motorcycle license. | 1 | Mediator selectionProbably the best advice. It’s not like I have any idea which mediator in the city is any good. I’ll communicate that to my attorney and sit back to get their best available date. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/08/22 05:41 AM
Mediator selectionI don’t mind a lump sum payout if the number is reasonable. But the binding component you bring up is a useful detail. That will be something to ask my attorney. If we can’t get a binding agreement in mediation, then it won’t matter and I’ll show up to check the box. | /r/Divorce_Men | 19/08/22 05:38 PM
What makes you remarry?I got married because of this. Twice. Before my second marriage, nobody in the church ever questioned whether this was a good idea. It was my good friends outside of the church who gave good counsel, but I went through it anyway. I still go to church, but given that we don’t live under a theocracy, I think all their teaching on marriage is outdated. | /r/Divorce_Men | 18/08/22 01:17 PM
What end goal do most woman see with false accusationsThis article covers the incentives for women making false DV allegations. Forcing you out of the house and throwing you into a system where you are guilty until proven innocent is a logical and effective strategy. I’ll let others with personal experience chime in. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/08/22 08:23 PM
Do people, relationships, come with an Expiration date?My parents have a great marriage. Was a bit rocky when I left for college, but by every indication it’s working out well. The uncle I’m closest to has a wonderful relationship with his wife - they are planning their Round-the-World trip once their teens leave for college. My best man has a toddler with his wife and by all accounts they are doing well. As I’ve said before, I see successful marriages all around me (and I make the effort to surround myself with such people). For reason within and o… | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/08/22 07:14 PM
Do people, relationships, come with an Expiration date? You say in your immediate family there are 7 successful marriages. Out of how many? What would modeling them look like? I’m particularly interested because I surround myself with people who have successful marriages (afaik). | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/08/22 12:40 AM
Do people, relationships, come with an Expiration date?Houses and central heating are also not natural. That doesn’t mean they are not useful. Monogamy was invented because it was (maybe still is) a useful way of organizing society. Does that mean most people will abide by it? Evidence is fairly mixed. But the biggest predictor of infidelity is loss of interest. That’s probably going to look different to everyone. Having said that, this hasn’t been my struggle personally. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/08/22 12:35 AM
Do people, relationships, come with an Expiration date? There’s biological evidence for this. It’s called sexual dimorphism. In animal species that are monogamous, males and females are about the same size, like swans. In other animals, the more intense winner-take-all competition there is, the greater the difference between male and female. On one extreme is the elephant seal. Males are huge and winners keep a whole harem of females. Human males are ~15% larger than females. Females actively seek out taller (proxy for stronger, richer, etc) males. | 22 | Do people, relationships, come with an Expiration date? You’re reading a skewed sample of men who have been screwed one way or the other. That’s why this group exists. If you want an unbiased sample, this isn’t the place for it. However, I do math and have to think logically for a living, so I’ll indulge this thought. Male and female brains are different. In the book “A Billion Wicked Thoughts”, researchers found over and over that what is romantic and relevant for men is completely different than from women. The finding that women are far pickier th… | /r/Divorce_Men | 12/08/22 03:33 PM
Future proof my next marriage? This is a post worth a sticky. It is well written and fair to the HOW and WHY as to the current state of marriage. It’s not overtly bitter like many justifiably feel after their divorce. It concedes the rationale for how we got to where we are today. Someone recommended the real world divorce ebook. The takeaway that stuck with me was how divorces are handled in other countries with fairer laws that also respect all the things that have to do with women’s rights, I.e. Netherlands and Germany. And do something like this. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CgPGlmzp9z2/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY= Maybe you’ll feel it’s petty to brag on social media. | 3 | Marriage Heading to DivorceI didn’t (and still don’t really) understand mental illness. From what I read, one of the symptoms of borderline disorder is impulsive sexuality. Being men, we might take that as a positive sign in a relationship, when really it should be a major red flag. In other words, some/most/all of the “great” things about your relationship could have actually just been manifestations of mental illness. Not real love. | /r/Divorce_Men | 10/08/22 03:08 PM
Let's kick the day with some positivity guys!I eat better. I sleep better. I’m leaner than I was a year ago. I do exciting things on my schedule when I want to. The divorce isn’t final yet, so I don’t yet know what my price for freedom is going to look like. But on the bright side, it cannot be more than I can afford, I.e. no SS given short marriage. Statically speaking, if men can figure out the short term emotional turmoil immediately after a divorce, they are going to do really well. | 2 | 401K division in MassachusettsI am in a similar position with different numbers. I’m in a one-pot state. Using some rounded and fictional numbers: I entered the marriage with 401k balance of $200k. After one year of marriage, we are divorcing and the 401k balance is $300k. By default, the entire $300k balance is divisible 50/50. It’s up to me to make the argument for why it should be the $100k accumulation that’s divisible 50/50. | 7 | Marriage Heading to DivorceIt sounds like some form of mental illness. She needs help. Don’t try to tackle this yourself and don’t try to apply reason and logic. Don’t try to control her words or behaviors. I know all of that is difficult to hear and tempting to ignore, but taking what you said at face value, I can relate to some of the frustrations. My advice is to seek professional help. The key would be to learn how to talk about it gently. In the meantime, protect your assets. | 0 | Can you help me get my head out of my Ass?Your thoughts are the reason why the system exists the way it does. Consider what you just committed in writing: make her change her mind If you are thinking that way, you are a danger to her and to others, maybe even yourself. Hence the logic of a TRO. It’s not a perfect system, but the reason it exists in this form is exactly because there have been people who acted on that impulse. Others have given you better advice for moving on. | 13 | Filibustering a divorceI need to steal this line for future use. OP, you need to get your own life together and figure out what you want. If your current relationship is unfulfilling, guess who’s responsible for at least half of it? | /r/Divorce_Men | 10/08/22 12:48 AM
How do you feel about your STBX or Ex?Because while I was trying to reconcile the marriage she asked for the dog to keep her company. I’ve written about this before, and unfortunately the dog is now a bargaining chip to keep the settlement reasonable. She has mental issues, so she’s likely willing to pay a big monetary price to keep the dog. I would consider it a big win if I can pay her a reasonable amount of money to move on, and I get to keep the dog. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/08/22 08:42 PM
Can someone help me answer this question for Discovery? How did you make purchases over the last 5 years? If you used a card, there’s a paper trail. It’s up to you to dig up your past credit/debit card statements and start highlighting all the >$500 purchases. Or you could not, and then get screwed because you didn’t do your homework. It’s going to be on you to show that she has possession of more of the communal property than you do, so that when it comes to division you stand to pay less. Start organizing your papers. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/08/22 07:07 PM
How do you feel about your STBX or Ex?It oscillates between 5 (feel sorry) and 6 (angry). Statistically speaking, she’s going to be worse off and have lower quality partners after me. What I’m angry about is her having possession of my dog, which I had for years prior to meeting her. At the end of the day, I just can’t wait for this to be over. I’ll be out tens of thousands for a short marriage that never should have happened, but the peace and indifference that comes with it will be invaluable. | /r/Divorce_Men | 09/08/22 02:32 PM
Trouble IncomingThank you for sharing your story. Taken at face value, I see who has character and who doesn’t. Well done and my best to you. We were too optimistic and too different in what we wanted out of life. Second marriage: Started at 29.5, separated 8 months later. Tried to reconcile for 8 months because I’m a good guy. | 6 | Marriage Certificate Waivernever marry someone who earns significantly less than you This is a really important one. As recently as 1.5 generations ago, this was basically the norm. In many Midwest and Southern US cultures, people would be married in their early 20s, and the woman would commonly be economically inferior to the man. Many of these marriages are upheld as success stories today because of their length: 20, 50, even 80 year old anniversaries are celebrated in church. But that’s not the world today. | 1 | I need some adviceIt’s also why it becomes invaluable to talk about these things in a group of people with no stake in your mating game. You cannot be objective on your own. It’s more useful to have strangers in the internet weigh in, because maybe someone will say something you need to hear that you would never think of yourself. | 1 | Asset Division Help! This was my understanding prior to reading more and consulting an experienced attorney. In practice, I suspect that if my case goes to trial, the court may decide to split all the assets I had before marriage in half anyways for convenience. I know we can do some math to calculate how much of the balance can attributed to “growth during the marriage”, but the bigger issue is making a compelling argument for that. | 7 | I need some adviceI would consider my STBxW a head turner. Probably a 9/10 in the Midwest. In NYC or LA, more like a 7/10. The short answer is don’t compromise your sanity for beauty. I did it, and it’s potentially costing me half of everything and more. Thankfully there are no kids. They would have been beautiful, but I could not imagine going through this process 5 years in the future with custody issues to worry about. Marriage is about partnership. | 2 | Asset Division Help!I see how that math works, and I do complicated math things for a living. But I don’t think any court is going to have the patience to listen to that, and so I see why they would just split the account balance 50/50 by default. Even if it screws over one party. I guess it’s become much more important now to try and get to a settlement. | /r/Divorce_Men | 26/07/22 03:12 AM
Asset Division Help!Let’s take 401k as an example. Let’s say on the day before I was married there was $200k. During the marriage I made regular (automatic) contributions to the account. Then on the day of filing, the amount was still $200k. Because of the movements in the stock market, I actually lost value during that time. But no money was ever taken out. My STBxW was one of the most attractive of the bunch, and she was interesting, and it was mutual. The problem was I wasn’t picky enough. There’s a concept called social desirability bias, which is commonly used to describe how people respond to surveys differs from what they actually think/feel. Both my marriages and relationships were short, so the clear lesson here is to not jump all-in too soon. | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/06/22 05:38 AM
How to apply a legal squeezeSince she’s in grad school and one of those anxious students, what will get her to settle quickly is forcing her to spend time on the case. Basically stuff like passwords being changed, passcodes and locks being changed (she moved out), and cards suddenly not working, are the kind of things that will send a message. I’ll keep the joint credit card open so she can’t say she’s completely cut off. And fund the joint bank account minimally so she can’t withdraw too much at once. The point is to appl… | /r/Divorce_Men | 30/06/22 05:35 AM
How to apply a legal squeezeI should have mentioned the STBxW is a graduate student and there are no children involved. | /r/Divorce_Men | 29/06/22 08:03 PM
How to apply a legal squeezeThings have already been filed, which is why I cannot do some of the things you’ve stated like freezing joint credit cards. However I’m trying to send an above board message that things are not going to be as relaxed. | /r/Divorce_Men | 29/06/22 07:11 PM
Seeking Advice: AITA? (Long Post)How did you from someone with a real job to becoming an unpaid nursing assistant? Assuming you had a rewarding career in the first place (or something like one or else you wouldn’t have landed your partner), it would seem that there wasn’t enough negotiation in that decision. It’s her mother. If anyone was going to sacrifice for that person, it would have been her daughter who could at least have paid for a full-time helper with all the career growth. But that’s all hindsight from across the str… | /r/Divorce_Men | 29/06/22 12:18 PM
Top 5 reasons your marriage failed and who initiated the divorce?I want to explore mental health a little more. I don’t have mental health issues and I didn’t understand how to correctly handle someone who does. I made a lot of mistakes in how I dealt with that. | /r/Divorce_Men | 25/06/22 05:09 PM

Pre-Divorce AdviseDo not move out. Even if you are at fault for anything you aren’t telling us, do not move out. Unless a court orders you to do so, do not move out. Whatever else is going on, the advice everyone else has given you is in the best interest of your future financial self. You may feel guilt, shame, etc. None of it will matter when you’re broke. Do not move out. | /r/Divorce_Men | 24/06/22 03:23 PM
I brought the dog into the relationshipThe time between now and eventual mediation is hell though. Things were just filed, and I’m anxious to get it all done with. I’m organized and have statements and spreadsheets. Until ordered back into my possession, it’s hard to see how she would voluntarily give up the dog. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/06/22 09:18 PM
I brought the dog into the relationshipThanks for the responses so far. They’re not what I want to hear, which makes them extra valuable. Having a predetermined amount ahead of time for what I’d be willing to trade the dog for would be an advantage. It takes the emotion out of the decisions. Moreover, there’s the problem of winner’s curse. The person who concedes more to keep the dog may end up overpaying. I can’t imagine feeling resentment every time you see the dog. She’s in a worse position to take care of the dog. She’ll also hav… | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/06/22 04:22 PM
I brought the dog into the relationshipActually she’s moved out. I still have all of my “stuff”, although the assets acquired over time are going to be a bit of an issue. Why do you say it’s not going to trial? What happens if a deal cannot be struck because I want the dog and she doesn’t want to give it up? | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/06/22 02:05 PM
Fixing your marriage, what did you try to do?If the woman wanted a reconciliation, she would be the one to recommend the counseling and videos, etc. I have no doubt you love the woman. I’ll even take your word for it that you are at fault and that you’re working on your problems. But from my experience, the work you put into yourself is independent of her desire for you. As others have posted, it’ll take her time to open up and admit that she’s left the relationship. That won’t change anything other than wasting your time because you wante… | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/06/22 02:02 PM
Finalizing DivorceYou’ve received a lot of good advice, but one that has been somewhat glossed over is her status as H-1B. That means she doesn’t have permanent residence and if she loses her job, she loses the ability to stay in the USA. Getting married to you fast tracks her ability to get a green card. It sounds like you know what to do, but I want to make sure you’re aware of how things stand on the immigration front. | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/06/22 01:47 PM
2 years post divorceYou’re in a town of 60k. Play the numbers a little and you’ll realize that there are maybe 30 single females of desirable age and physical attractiveness in your geography. Do you even know where to find them? I think your #1 limiting factor is geography. If you’re 32M in great physical shape, the next thing to work on would be advancing in career. That would also best be served by moving to a metro area with >1M population. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/06/22 12:13 AM
8 Mistakes Men Should Avoid During DivorceThanks I needed to hear this. Our short (<2 year marriage) is coming to an end, and I need to get into the “circle the wagons” mindset as someone posted above. | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/06/22 12:44 PM
