Not true actually. Married couples pay less tax (if you have 1 person earning a lot, he will pay more than a married couple each earning half the amount). This is because marginal taxation increases. Additionally there are significant tax advantages to being married specifically. The way I see it it's the opposite, the government want married couples so they lower tax for them (as society probably views married couples as more stable)
