I was hoping to get my youngest son out of high school before the bomb dropped. I was the product of divorce and didn’t want the same for him. We separated the summer before his junior year…🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m sorry, brother. I’m 4 years out and have made a great living for my son and myself. If you built it before, you can build it again. But this time without the vacuum attached to the back end of your net worth.

No, I wouldn’t have gotten married and subsequently divorced.

A fresh, hot homemade dinner every night for the first year. No fast food, no Uber eats, no door dash. It may not sound like a big deal but I got my son full time. Now he makes his own meals and has healthy eating habits.

Same - our media room was basically a receiving warehouse for Amazon packages - at least half of them unopened. After we separated I found a brand new iPad still in the box. She flew to Paris twice and bought from the Louis Vuitton store there. So much waste🤬

Good for you. The shoes, purses and eating out sounds all too familiar. I had to sell the dream house we built but I will make more money in the first six months of this year than my best year when we were together. And what was the point of a good income when your wife spends $1,100 on clothes hangers..?

Wow, this is my story in a nutshell! We separated in July, divorce finalized in March. A woman I had kept in touch with over the years randomly texted me a couple of months after separation asking how life was. When I told her I was getting a divorce she suggested we meet up for drinks. We had sex in the parking lot of my apartment complex. It was hot and I, too, had forgotten what it was like to be desired and have an enthusiastic partner after a couple of sexless years with an ex wife who acte…

Right there with you. We got divorced after 21 years together. In one of life’s most important endeavors, I failed to keep it together. There are times I feel like I failed. But I married a hoarder and spendaholic. We were doomed from the beginning. Our marriage failed, not me. It sucks in that I had to re-orient my vision for the future but I increasingly see it as wide open with possibilities, none of which has bank accounts with black holes in the bottom. It’s okay to feel what you are feelin…

3 months. Hear me out: we were together 21 years, married 17. No sex at all the last year and a half or so. We both knew it was over and it slowly just…unraveled. So I felt single for a while. It turns out there were a few women on the sidelines who were patiently waiting. One made it very clear what she wanted. We hooked up about 2 hours after we met for drinks. And I have to say that being with a woman who was enthusiastic made all the difference in the world. There is someone out there for ev…

We divorced when my youngest was 16 - after 21 years together. The kids turned out just fine but part of me feels like I wasted a big chunk of my life by staying with her. There is no easy answer to your question. I wish you luck - it’s not an easy road to walk down. But it does end.

No infidelity on her part (as far as I know) but separated in July. I’m now at a point where I don’t care if she starts sleeping with someone else. She was never all that sexual and I wish whatever poor bastard she hooks up with all the luck in the world - he’ll need it. I was hurt and frustrated at first like a lot of dudes but time really does help. We have kids together so no contact isn’t really an option but I have very little interaction with her. I don’t miss her or the marriage.
/r/Divorce_Men04/12/21 07:39 PM

54 and I was married to a covert narcissist wife who never cared about the kids and I. We were together for 20 years. It was a loveless, sexless merry go round of misery. I think sometimes I should have left earlier but my kids would have been neglected and ignored. We can’t go back only forward. The poster who mentioned sunk cost fallacy nailed it.

She definitely sounds narcissistic. My ex certainly was…she spent $1,100 on clothes hangers - fucking clothes hangers! I hope you can emerge stronger on the other side! During my separation there was a woman who had been on the sidelines, patiently waiting out my marriage. When she found out I was separated she blew me like a pornstar. What a difference it made to be with someone who was enthusiastic to be with me! This is good advice. Mine started sleeping in a different bedroom. It may be that she checked out from the marriage a while ago and this is her way of preparing for being single. It may also be her way of trying to inflict pain on you (like mine did). It’s a shitty feeling, regardless. I’m sorry for you, my friend. I’ve been there. No matter how bad the marriage, divorce still sucks.

I feel for you, friend. My divorce from my narcissistic wife is almost complete. Everyone who thinks they know her just loves her - smart, attractive, generous, compassionate. But they don’t know the other side: greedy, selfish, spendaholic, hoarder. It was a false front and the kids and I came in dead last. Whenever I would challenge her on her spending or neglect, she would withhold communication, affection, and sex. A couple of years ago I stopped caring and that was the beginning of the end.…

If I can offer my own perspective: GTFO, now! My nex wife squandered $2.5 mil of our money before she took off and left my son and I. Women who have a spending problem don’t get better, they just spend more and more until there is nothing left. This. Will. Not. Change. Good luck, brother!

This was my biggest struggle, too. I grieved for the life I had imagined we would build together. But the actual life we had built was lonely, sexless, and miserable and in no way resembled our actual marriage. I married a selfish, spendaholic hoarder who invested all her time and our money in trying to impress her friends and co-workers. Oh, trust me that is the tip of the iceberg. We made a lot of money the last 5 years and she spent it all: shoes, purses, handbags, clothes. She sounds like she might have narcissistic tendencies. Talk to a lawyer, if you can. Your kids might be at risk. If there is a way to covertly get her suicide threats on tape, you may be able to get your kids to a relative and away from her and get some kind of protective order. I recognize you might not want any harm to come to her, either, but she is an adult. Note: I am NOT a lawyer.

Can a sex doll spend all your joint money on shoes, clothes, handbags, and jewelry? Can a sex doll trickle out bland sex twice a year? Can a sex doll ignore you and the kids for 20 years then complain that she isn’t happy? Anyone in our shared social/professional circle will only get the most basic story of why we are getting divorced. I also am a big believer in therapy. It isn’t a weakness to have someone to talk to. This is an excellent reply. I would have never known this about my STBXW. But as I was working through some of my marital issues my therapist suggested my wife might have some narcissistic traits. I started doing research and she has 5-6 strong traits right out of the DSM-V. I agree that the term gets thrown around a lot and too many people think narcissism is just vanity or selfishness. I think you may be correct. My son is 15 so I doubt he’ll be calling anyone else mom but fancy dinners and a sex in the city lifestyle is going to be more difficult for a 44 year old woman. Mine surrounded herself with divorce porn. I saw it on her laptop screensavers. Little sayings like: “there is no greater pain than being stuck where you no longer belong.” Or, “start over, dear. Seek the life you desire and have the courage to pursue it.” She told me she is a strong, empowered woman. Gee, that’s great. Meanwhile, you are abandoning our son and me so you can pursue a high rise apartment and eating in fancy restaurants? It sounds less like empowerment and more like hedonism. And …

We have been very successful over the last several years and should have $600-700K liquid but she is a shopaholic and we have not much to show for it except a big house neither of us wants. I’m getting custody of our son, thank god. I don’t think she ever really loved me because most narcissists can’t really love someb…

My STBXW is 43. When menopause hits, it should be fun to watch…from afar..

Your analogy is spot on: it is like being slow boiled where the temperature gets hotter over the course of months or years. I’ve been w/my wife for 20 years. We decided on divorce 2 days ago. It sounds like your ex is more of an overt narcissist while mine is a covert. Not sure which is worse since a covert will suck the life out of you over a longer time horizon. Yours sounds like one of the most extreme examples I’ve ever come across. So sorry, my man. And you had to go to the hell of the Midd…

We are both in real estate, too. High wage earners but she is a spender. We should have a million dollars in the bank but don’t. One of the things I’m looking forward to is re-gaining my financial independence. While I don’t think she cheated, I suspect she has already lined up my replacement.

I read every word. Yours sounds like an extreme example. I’m going to share my story when I get home from work. You are not alone…not by a long shot.

I really needed to hear this. My wife and I are divorcing after 20 years. We both make good money but mine is commission only and hers is salary plus commission. She has made more than me the last few years. I was convinced I was going to have to move into an apartment even going so far as to visit a couple of nearby complexes. It would be easier for her to make the payments. We have a 16 year old son. When we agreed to divorce, she said she wanted me to stay in the house so as to minimize the d…

My divorce journey officially started last night. This is all great advice and I am saving this for future reference. Wish me luck!

I am right there with you, friend. My wife and I had the talk last night - we are getting a divorce. Here is the rub: I have been the least important person in her life during our 20 years together. She was always there for her friends, co-workers, employees, bosses, but never for the kids and I (she is a covert narcissist). I have been unhappy for more of our years together than not. But the ease and coldness with which she discussed her intent to leave was disappointing. She is at the height o…

I sent this to my 16 year old son. He said, “That’s sad.” I replied, “Because it’s true.”

I’ve been with my wife for 20 years. I’m in the same boat: probably 5 or 6 very clear markers for covert narcissism. Now that I am aware of it, it’s time for her to devalue and discard me for someone else. I know it will hurt when she gets the new guy (and it likely won’t take long) but then I realize that he will end up as miserable as I have been for the last several years. I hope she can find whomever/whatever she is looking for but she won’t. That void will always be there and I won’t be the…

So glad to know there is life on the other side of being married to a wife who is a covert narcissist. I am on my way out, too. Best of luck to you.

I wish us both lots of luck! Pls let me know how it works out. Your experience will help me as I prep for my divorce. I do have a question for you: does your wife pour all her energy into carefully curating a reputation as a kind, giving, generous person whose dark side is reserved for you only? Our social circle all love her so it’s going to be awkward when people ask me why we split up… For your situation, I’d suggest a nanny cam or two for around the house and maybe an audio recorder. Documen…

I can only offer my experience for what it might be worth. I didn’t know it at the time but I married a covert narcissist. She is obsessed with self improvement to the point where the kids and I are not even in her head/heart anymore. It started off innocently enough: Tony Robbins books, real estate and stock seminars, meditation. But it has grown increasingly bizarre over the years: there was the guy on YouTube who claimed to be from another time/dimension, past lives regression kooks, she read…

I’m married to a female covert narcissist and I am quite confident we will be getting a divorce rather soon. Please DM me if you need somebody to talk to/vent. People who aren’t familiar with narcissists don’t fully understand how skilled they are at manipulation. What clued you in to her narcissism?

She wouldn’t spare my feelings by hiding it. She would enjoy telling me to see it crush me. That is the difference a narcissist brings to the table...

I know what an alpha widow is and she and I both had a past. I met her alpha and he’s no alpha...but she clearly cared more about him than me... We paid for this vacation before Covid hit plus she makes more than me. If she is truly a covert narcissist, she isn’t looking to milk me for money for but for Narcissistic Supply. That is all that truly matters to a narcissist. They are a different breed of human - more manipulative than you can imagine and utterly ruthless. I agree, however, that I sh…

Same boat here - the kids and I never see her and she would rather go out with friends or co-workers than come home to us…I’ll never understand that as long as I live.

Thanks for sharing. My youngest is 15 and I think he will be fine🤞. I am glad that this didn’t happen earlier in life since my parents divorced when I was 7 and I didn’t fully understand it. That is also one of the reasons I don’t want a divorce but as someone else in this group pointed out, you can’t negotiate desire. I have a great therapist and have suggested we both go or go individually with the idea of working towards joint sessions. I don’t really see it happening, though. My best to you,…

I really needed to hear this! My wife doesn’t love me anymore and I know what’s coming, probably in 1-3 months. I’m a bit older at 54, but I am still in good shape (gym 4-5 days a week) and not so worried if a woman is interested or not. Ive already started or been doing some of these things. I certainly am happy for you, internet stranger, and want to thank you for your post💪. I will post my story once it becomes official. This subreddit has been of enormous comfort..
