Light sparring to me is more of a focus on head movement and footwork than offense. When I spar I much prefer head gear.

You'll never get good without sparring. Otherwise do taebo from a billy blanks video. You can still spar without going hard. Plus headgear helps. It's only when you do hard sparring like at Mayweather's gym where brain damage occurs.
