Oh geez, I am triggered. Last spring one of my co-workers died suddenly, evidently in her sleep. We all assumed she had had a stroke or heart attack (she was nearing 60 and a heavy smoker). Just recently I met a family member of hers. I mentioned how much we had enjoyed working with his niece and how shocked we had been by her sudden death as she hadn't complained of any symptoms like chest pains, etc. He told me it was fentanyl. You bring up a good point! Time how long it takes to do certain routine tasks. It's easy to procrastinate by saying, "I don't have time to do such-and-such." If you know how long it actually takes -- and like you say, it's usually not as long as you'd think -- you're less likely to put it off.

A wise man of my acquaintance once observed that sometimes the dread of a task is worse than the task itself. I find it helpful to tell myself I only have to do something for a set amount of time, like 15 minutes to an hour. If it's not going well, I can drop it when the buzzer goes off. Usually once I get over the hump of getting started, I'll stick with the task. Just gotta psyche myself into getting going!

Yeah, on the lower end of the income scale, there is not much correlation between skill and pay. I'm up over $24/hr now to push a sweeper and a mop, because I'm part of a union. Most jobs with comparable pay require a higher skill level. Most of my co-workers have stuck with the job for decades because they can't find anything comparable, pay-wise. I'm in the same boat -- I'd love to use my brain again, but no one is going to pay me $24 an hour for it, lol.

This is less about money than motivation, I think. As aspiring physician is probably pretty driven, and she thinks she wants a like partner. What she doesn't realize is that an equally driven partner is probably going to ask her to pick up his drycleaning and will be surprised and puzzled when she balks.
