"Hi, how are you?" is my typical go to. I'm not saying it blows people out of the water but I have found that if you actually listen to their response you can glean information to continue the conversation with. Overall openers are overrated and just a way to get people talking.

In addition to this, it can seriously help your career. I don't know what OP does but the ability to walk into a social work gathering and at the very least introduce yourself and hold your own for a short conversation can create connections that come in very useful later on.

an entertaining opener: "you're on my machine" (said with a smile), its a little more effective if she's using one of several (like a row of stationary bikes and the rest are empty). But you have to play it cocky/funny and keep the joke going

Yeah as far as IOIs go I think there are definitely a common set that are always going to be false (smiling, saying hello and engaging you in conversation) but I think its also important that if you're in doubt, just take the chance and ask for her number.

That seems to be my mental sticking point is that I'm not trying to get them in trouble at work. But like you and Tofu say, it seems that you need a little more attraction than usual but it will overcome the "I'm on the clock" reasoning.

If you think about the stereotypical creepy bar types, its usually the lone male sitting in the corner staring at people that comes to mind. If you want to avoid coming off as a creep I'd recommend that you try to talk to everyone in the bar including big groups (can be tough if you have social anxiety) and don't just talk to women because this can be pretty transparent (they're much more perceptive that you think). I enjoy it because your friends can end up being a crutch when you need to be social. Its really easy to just fall in with them and not talk to others. I've come to enjoy going solo because venue changes are up to me and also it makes me meet not only women who are out but I also try to talk with other guys my age and I end up meeting some fun people.

I agree with probama that if you are solo you loose all value when you change venues by yourself (unless you know people at the next venue), but I do it occasionally because I hit a slump or the venue just isn't working for me on that night. the short story to it is: it's a strong dominance display. you really have to try it to believe how powerful it is(not on your boss tho). Think about when people look down and away from you as a show of submission, well this is the polar opposite.

if you are engaged in conversation and your mental chatter is causing problems, use a standard eject (food, walk dog, meet friends), leave the location and go somewhere else. I usually use the traveling down time to mentally reboot. If it is AA I'm not sure what to tell ya.
